Not much because
1. NU as a whole has slightly more girls than guys.
2. the engineering school has one of the highest, if not the highest, girl to guy ratio (3 to 7 vs national average of 1 to 4).

Hmm, so given my low Math SAT score and somewhat stronger science/tech background... WCAS or McCormick? I have all my essays except for the Why Northwestern one because I cannot decide which school. Aaaah.

I recently attended an info session for NW. The AC stated that your chances for ED were the same as regular decision. If they do not accept you ED, they do not consider you again RD.

On the other hand, my guess is that schools don't like to admit they are slightly more generous to ED.

I also think the AC gave a wrong explanation. The fact that they don't defer ED is more of an indication that ED may be easier (i.e. if you are not good enough for ED, there's no way you are gonna be good enough for RD, no matter what your mid-year report shows or how much your test scores has improved since you filed your ED application).

Northwestern has long had a very open attitude about preferential treatment ED. The greater difference between acceptance rates ED and RD there compared with similar institutions has always reflected this.

From their admissions website, a pretty simple summary of policy:

"Applicants who choose Early Decision send a strong, positive message to Northwestern. Given their high level of interest and overall academic and personal strength, the rate of admission for our Early Decision applicants is higher than our overall admit rate."
