Chances ED2? Help!

Hi guys,

As you see by the title, I’m wondering what my chances are for Lehigh as I’m really stressing about whether or not I’ll get in since there’s no official data on GPA which is what one of my weak points are.
Here’s my stats:

Applied to the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering
Unweighted GPA: 3.343
Weighted GPA: 3.86 (UPWARD TREND with a 4.2 weighted in Junior Year)
Class Rigor: Most Rigorous
No Class Rank
Location: NJ

Superscore SAT: 2100 (1430/1600)
CR: 660
Math: 770
Writing: 670

SAT 2
Math IIC: 800
Physics: 730 (how would most people regard this score?)

ECs:
Varsity Tennis (Varsity for four years) (Captain 2 years for 11th-12th) (Honorable Mention award)
JV Soccer (Two Years 9th-10th)
Debate (9th-12th)
Model U.N. (10th-12th); (Pioneer of the club) (Won award 10th grade)
Grade Representative (10th)
Job (10th-12th)
Dance (10th-12th) won some awards

Recs: Fairly Strong (but what if they were average?)
Extra rec from tennis coach (He told me it was great)

I know my GPA/SAT isnt that impressive, but what are my chances for the ED2 wave? Thanks a lot for your help guys.

I’m asian from NJ (am i considered URM)?
My CA essay is great.
Thanks again!

What? Areas of weakness? Confidence? Just kidding!

Your stats are fantastic! You know no one can really tell you your chances, right? However, I would think Lehigh would love to have you! The only thing I can think of is… How much financial aid do you need? You understand you might not get a great financial offer? And this is a binding agreement that you will accept whatever financial package you are offered.

Have you made sure to visit the campus to show demonstrated interest?

Have you sent your application in yet? Keep us posted! Best of luck!

@kikkydee , Haha I feel better after reading your post :). I didn’t apply for financial aid as I’m not even qualified for financial aid.

Question: If I ED’d to Lehigh, isn’t that the maximum amount of interest an applicant could show? Is it necessary to visit the campus on top of that?
To answer your question, I didn’t YET. I plan on visiting by the end of January (Really excited!).

I sent in my application, so all i can do now is sweat and stress :), but I’ll definitely keep you updated! Thanks again!

Lehigh students are known for really loving their school. The admission officers want students who are happy. You really do need to see a school to be sure it is right for you. If you live in New Jersey there is no excuse for you not to visit. It will be seen as a negative. Yes, ED is a sign of huge interest but you could go for a year and then transfer to another school - which Lehigh does not want to see happen. Unless you live really far from Lehigh they do expect you to visit. I would call or email your admissions officer right now and tell them the weekend you plan to visit and reserve a spot for a tour and request an interview. Then they know you will be visiting and when. And this visit is before the ED2 decision come out, right?

Since you don’t qualify for financial aid it is super wise for you to apply ED2. I think you have a really strong chance of acceptance.

Look into the Lehigh Leadership program!

Also, have you considered a business minor?

Lehigh encourages their engineers to use their electives to enhance their engineering degrees. Some very interesting possibilities. My son took the required economics course online, from home, after his freshman year. Then he stayed at Lehigh sophomore summer (really fun) and took summer school classes and did research with a professor. He was able to get an engineering degree and two minors.

I know it is a stressful time. But, try to relax and enjoy yourself. With your stats you will do well anywhere you end up!

Best!

Working against you is being from NJ …Asian works against you at most schools, though Lehigh has a lower Asian population than many peers… I would think engineering would have more than its share of Asian applicants. Being female would help, male hurt. Still, your scores and ED2 would, I think, get you in. A big factor will be follow through with your 1st semester senior grades – the trend is your friend, assuming you did well. Going ED2 without visiting is not typically a recommended thing, but I don’t think not visiting will affect your admissibility. Good luck!

@LehighHawkDad
Thanks for your insight!
Is applying to the college of engineering generally difficult?

Yes, engineering is the biggest draw to Lehigh (along with maybe finance and accounting) so more competitive applicant pool than liberal arts and science.

bump.

My AP Scores go as following:
AP Calc AB - 5
AP Physics 1 - 4
AP Stastics - 4
AP English Language - 3

@LehighHawkDad or anyone , do you know how much emphasis Lehigh puts on their applicants GPA? More than SAT? Equal? Less? Makes me question given that they don’t release that information to the public.

Hi there my favorite worry wart!!!

My son did not have a perfect GPA. He took 4 years of Spanish and most of that was hard earned Bs. But he chose to stick with it to develop a language skill. I think Lehigh prefers students to take challenging courses. I think they admire someone taking a risk on a challenging course. If you go to Lehigh you are going to be expected to work hard. My son was an engineer. It was cute to hear them talk - they enjoyed the long hours and the challenging courses. They all seemed pretty serious about becoming great engineers.

The admission officers really do take a lot of time to study each applicant. They take a very holistic approach.

A smaller school, like Lehigh, has many objectives them need to consider when building each freshman class. No one from the outside can know what decisions they are going to make.

You are an excellent candidate. You are just going to have to wait a bit. Hang in there!

I think schools like Lehigh are more likely to be more forgiving of this or that low score than a low gpa. Students are hard working and grades are the best indicator of success. That said, the trend is your friend since your are doing your best work in your most difficult junior year courses – so there is your argument about being able to work hard.
