Chances Engineering UC Berkeley

Hi guys! I'm applying to Berkeley and I am torn between electrical engineering and computer science (EECS) and economics. I got a 31 composite in the ACT (with a 35 in maths) and have a GPA of 3.87/4.00. The only reason why I wouldn't apply to engineering is because I do not have the science foundation in my IB courses, as I'm taking only Bio SL. Will that hurt my application for engineering? And, is it true that only 23% of engineering students are female in Berkeley? In that case, will being female and peruvian (minority) help me get in?
Thanks so much!

Yes, roughly 20% of EECS will be female. Technically they’re not allowed to consider that as a factor during admissions, but it certainly doesn’t hurt and in practice it might give you a bit of an edge.

If you’re undecided between majors, it’s a lot easier to transfer from CoE to L&S than it is to go the other way, but CoE is harder to get into. You might also want to look into L&S CS (BA), since it’s in the same college as Econ. That would make it much easier to change your major later, and if you’re more interested in the CS side of things it’s very similar to EECS.

Besides being easier to get in (L&S vs COE), you have the option of double majoring in Econ and CS and using all the same GEs. You could still do EECS and Econ as a dual major, but you’d have to do some additional GEs.
