Chances? - feel free to post yours

Female, incoming senior, CT
I want to apply to UVA - legacy student (in-state), UNC Chapel Hill, William & Mary, U Miami OH, Wake Forest, Emory, Vanderbilt

Unweighted gpa: 3.844
Weighted: 4.44
I took APUSH & AP Lang junior year & I will be taking AP Calc AB, AP Bio, AP Music Theory, AP Lit & dual-enrollment Spanish (AP isn't offered at my school). I am in the top 10% of my graduating class. I plan on majoring in Bio & Music.

I've taken 4 years of math, english, social studies, science, music & 5 of spanish.

Extracurriculars:
-community orchestra (outside of school)
-violin lessons
-pit orchestra
-chamber ensemble - I am the concertmistress of this & my school orchestra as well
-health careers club
-marching band (3 years - I will be doing a semi-professional symphony orchestra outside of school instead - but I was a section leader in band as well on clarinet)
-I have also done Relay for Life & I was a team captain this year.
-Overall I have about 300 hours of community service
-I am doing an internship at a hospital right now
-I also attended a National Student Leadership conference for medicine recently

Testing:
I got a 1980 on the SAT: 600 math, 650 reading, 730 writing - I will be taking this again. I would like to get a 2100

I got a 28 on my ACT - I will be taking this again as well. I would like to get a 30 or higher. I haven't taken subject tests but I think I will in November - Spanish & US History, maybe math.

Thank you! & feel free to post your chances!

Get the scores up and you’re probably in to UVA. I’m not sure about the others. Your GPA and ECs are good, and it’s good that they’re concentrated into a (what seems like) music as an interest and then medicine as an aspiration. I would say you should try and shadow some physicians or something, but you don’t really need to.

Good Luck!

I think that you are a match at UVA. For emory and vanderbilt, increase your SAT/ACT, and you’ll have a good shot (but, these schools can be random). Also, try to gain a few leadership positions in your EC’s. Good luck!

If you get your scores up, you will be in great shape. Your extra-curriculars match your major very well, so I think that shows colleges how passionate you are (: best of luck!
chance me back?

thank you - all of you! :)

I’d say in at Miami, probably in at UVA, low match at W&M, and very low reach at the others. Good luck!

UNC is very hard OOS, William and Mary is tough OOS too. Wake is SAT optional, Vandy is very tough (apply ED- it really helps there) and Emory really cares about demonstrated interest. The others should be good safeties. Def try and raise that SAT/ACT a bit too, that can really help you (ands kinda necessary) for the WM, UNC, Vandy, and Emory.

I used to live 45 minutes away from Miami-Ohio and a lot of the kids from my school went there. A lot of them were the party type and got in. They weren’t the brightest kids, but they weren’t dumb. You have a better GPA than they did, so I think you’re in for Miami-Ohio. I don’t know enough information about the others though.

oh a couple more things I forgot:
my mom went to UVA for undergrad, & my dad went to UVA to get his masters in nuclear engineering - the naval academy paid for him to go - does he count too?

I will be getting 3 recommendations: 1 from my guidance counselor, the head of the guidance department, one from the head of the music department, & one from my physics teacher - she got her masters in teaching from UVA.

my high school is public & semi-competitive. the top 5 kids always go to Ivies & the top 10% public Ivies. my graduating class is 450

I’m not really sure about UVA’s policy on legacy, but from what I’ve read it’s undergrad that matters more for undergrad admissions. But it might help a bit.
From the common app last year it said to enter your parent’s undergrad education details.
You have a very good chance either way.

And the UVA legacy will help a bit, especially your mom’s undergrad

I think that the legacy will definitely help you at UVA. Your ECs will do a really good job in highlighting your interest and passion for your major and your GPA is pretty good. I think if you do reach your goal scores for the SAT and/or ACT, you’ll be a match for all of them! Good Luck!

It looks like your in for UVA & Miami. The others are a reach and Vandy is almost out-of-reach. You need to increase your ACT score to 30+, SAT is pretty solid though. UVA is an awesome school my brother goes there and loves it, there would be nothing wrong with deciding to become a Cav.

I’m kinda late to this post but I agree with most of what they said. Your scores being higher would really help especially and Vandy & Emory because you’re on the low end of their pool score-wise. The rest is excellent so Good luck!
