Chances: Female Engineer

OK...my first chance thread...I didn't want to have to do this, but I'm getting nervous!! Especially since my friend got outright rejected ED...

Major: Mechanical Engineering

Caucasian, female, out of state

SAT: CR - 750, M - 760, W - 770 (total 2280)
SAT II: English lit - 770, Math Lvl 2 - 770, Chem - 700 (after not taking chem for 2 years)

GPA: 4.6 weighted (out of 4)
Rank: no ranking (but within top 5 I think) out of 350 or so

Classes: AP English 12, AP Calc II, AP Computer Science A, AP European History, Symphonic/Marching Band all 4 years, AP Calc I, AP Gov't, AP US History, AP English 11, Physics (not AP, they didn't offer it when I took it) and various other high level (or CM as we call them) courses

I am worried that I had to drop AP Spanish and AP Chemistry this year due to scheduling conflicts...so I only got up to Spanish 4 and I have no physical science classes this year!

ECs:
Woodwind Captain in Marching Band
Destination Imagination (participation and volunteering)
Dance Classes
Drama Club (International Thespian Society)
Musical Review Show (band and Dance Captain)
Private Flute Lessons (qualifying for regional honors band)
Community Band
Varsity Academic Team
Varsity Math Team
I'm probably forgetting some, but those are the important ones...

Jobs:
Tutoring
Babysitting

Essays:
I thought they were very good. My English teacher from this year thought they were decent, but everyone else loved them, including past English teachers.
One was about overcoming my lack of height and being a leader in the marching band, the other about Destination Imagination, calculus, and physics in wanting to become an engineer...

I'm really hoping that the female in mechanical engineering will help some...

So, I'm really nervous. What do you think?

i'm usually not one to actually say what i think about people's chances. i usually deffer people to the results thread. however, i am a fellow female that got accepted ed into biological engineering so i think i can actually help you out here. i actually also got a 2280 on my sats also (but 680v 800m 800w). i think you have GOOD chances of getting in because your sat's are solid and your gpa is outstanding. that shows a lot of hard work within the last 4 years. also, i really think the female in engineering thing helps. in addition to doing research in science, i've been doing backstage work for four years. you seem to have a similar second desire for the arts with your marching band work. you have significantly more ap's than i do (4 by the end of senior year), although my school doesn't offer a huge number of ap's. my essays were decent, very straightforward and to the point about my research to what i learned about myself as a researcher in the process. in my opinion, they were on the boring side, but i put my soul into making them perfect, and for engineering, sometimes the creative writing part suffers. you seem like a great candidate for cornell engineering and i hope to see you there in the fall.

You're a solid candidate. The female in engineering aspect helps, as rollercoaster838 pointed out, and as I'm sure you're aware of as well. My ex-gf got into CAS Bio ED with a 3.8, 2250, 720 700 satiis. Her essay was about Panera and how she wants to study food or something...

If your essay is what you say it is and your interview (if you had one) went well, I'd say you're in.

<-- takes a deep breath

Thanks everybody...you make me feel much better now...

Because I was looking at some of the decisions and was getting worried a bit.

Thanks!

Look at these stats:
http://dpb.cornell.edu/documents/1000003.pdf

About 40% of female engineers get in. You have very good stats. I'd say in.

i would bet a large sum of money that you get in. i know a lot of girls who got into engineering and then transferred out after a semester all because it was easier for them to get in via engineering. atleast you seem like you actually like engineering. good luck, maybe i'll see you in class...

haah lack of height...i am in the same boat ;)

dont worry about not doing AP Spanish. i dropped it after 3 days when i realized that i wouldnt need it and the added stress senior year isnt necessary. i replaced it with ap psych though..

your stats look really good, especially since you have high math scores. more power to you for loving physics lol :) good luck

wow, im an out of state white male applying to mechanical engineering with a 2270 SAT. and i also had to drop Spanish 5 AP because of scheduling conflicts...we're like the same person..except your a girl haha. anyways i think you have very good chances. Youre already a solid candidate to begin with, and yeah being a girl definitely does help with engineering. So basically you just have to hope you have a little bit of luck (since its an ivy)....Good luck!

Dear inspiredwriter, I see you have Destination ImagiNation in your bio and I want to be sure that you realize you could be eligible for scholarship money from the DI support group, DISC. We give out about 10,000 a year and the amount of the award- up to $2,000- is based on the creativity or usefulness of your entry and your participation. Being a volunteer is GREAT.
