Chances for 2016. Can chance back.

(I also included my stats withought freshman year, as I heard Michigan de-emphasizes them when recalculating GPA)

I think my essays will be good, we wrote practice ones in APLang, and I got an A in the class both semesters.

French (first lang), English

White male OOS, economics/business aim
Thanks again.

Michigan doesn’t recalculate GPAs anymore.

I think you are in good share. While Freshman year is considered, you have a very progressively improving GPA, a lot of AP’s, outstanding ACT (assume that is one sitting and not a superscore) and your EC’s show leadership. Get good recommendations, write a good essay and apply early.

Not a lock. But I think you have a decent shot.

Are you sure you calculated your GPA correctly?

What AP were you able to take freshman year?

I wouldnt be too worried if i were you. You have about a 90% chance of getting in in my opinion.

“Unweighted GPA: 3.3-3.4”

This is a huge warning sign. UMich generally does not take anything below a 3.5 unless it comes from certain extremely rigorous schools.

This was the case before UMich started getting insane amounts of applications. With something like 61,000 applications last year - and probably a similar amount this year -, a 3.4 just isn’t going to cut it.

The upward trend will help, and if you keep up that trend, your cumulative GPA will obviously improve a bit, but I don’t think your chances are all that great.

UMich rejected a LOT of 3.7’s this year; GPA really IS a lot. A lot of schools are ranked by their average GPA.
You have a shot, but you have to do really, really good on your essays and should try doing something stellar this summer. Also, realize that being OOS (I believe) puts you in a lot harder to get into bracket than instaters.

You’ll get in with those stardardized test scores, ignore these guys. Maximize your numbers, but I’d say you have a near 100% chance of getting in. I got in with just a 30 ACT and a 3.7 so it’s not as hard as people here make it seem.

A 3.4 is a completely different thing from a 3.7. Unless he went into an extremely competitive school, his chances aren’t that great.

Yes, you definitly have a chance, michigan loves to see the growth. For example your increase in GPA every year, and ur scores for tests are fine. As long as u have good essays that tell your story, u shud be fine

Unfortunately you probably would have had a tough time getting in this year and it will be even harder next year. Apply, but with your GPA I would say the rest of your application is gonna have to be stellar to give you a real shot.

i had a friend this year, instate, with a 3.4 gpa and 34 act with pretty good ECs and a very compelling story about why his grades suffered(basically half his family went to jail bcuz his brother and father tried to rob and kill a woman) get rejected this year. GPA matters a lot more than people think. UofM’s average is a 3.8 and there is a huge difference between that and yours. i would definitely suggest NOT applying EA so that you can factor in your 1st semester’s grades and raise your gpa a bit.

^^
Do not wait until after EA to apply – that is a HUGE disadvantage.

If you apply EA you’ll either get in during that round or you’ll get deferred. If you get deferred you’ll still send in your 1st semester grades and they’ll include that in your files.

^^^they do reject people with low GPAs. the OP would probably get rejected EA because of his/her extremely low(relatively) gpa. since michigan still has rolling admissions the OP could apply as soon as the 1st semester is over and greatly improve his/her chances. Applying EA is suicide

Apply EA. You’ll get defered. Send a mid year report.

mjmay7, you clearly do not know very much about umich’s admissions process.

umich VERY RARELY rejects anyone during EA. given the OP’s stats, i am certain that he/she would not get rejected during EA.

those very rare cases are almost entirely filled with people with extremely low gpas just like the OPs. there is a possibility that the OP will get rejected EA, especially because they are OOS, so why even risk it when they have rolling admissions?

The OP has an upward trend. He will get deferred, not rejected EA.

His GPA is nowhere near low enough to warrant a rejection during EA. Additionally, the OP posted that his high school is in the top 100 in the country. If that is truly the case, umich will recognize the rigor of his school, and put his GPA in the correct context.

The reason I recommend that he apply during EA is because waiting until RD presents significant disadvantages. While “officially” the admissions standards for EA and RD are supposed to be the same, in reality I assure you they are not.
