Chances for 7 year BS/MD combined program? Please help!

Hello. 1st post here.

-Indian male
-Will be a senior come september
-I attend Aviation High School in NY

GPA
-92.15% Cumalative average(weighted)

APs(my school barely offers any)
-Language and Composition-3
-Will take AP Physics B senior year
-All classes are honors besides engineering but my school does not give additional credit for them

SAT
-1770
-Math- 630
-Writing- 630
-Reading- 510
-I will retake it in October

SAT II's
-None taken yet =(

EC
-Science Leadership(2 years so far)
-Honor Society(1 year so far)
-Pegasus Society(1 year so far)
-Debate team(10th grade only)

Volunteer work
-1 full year of service for school(delivering attendence folders to classes and general work for guidance counselors)
-Nothing else...I know, I need to work on it

Thats about it. My school doesn't have much to offer because it is oriented towards the aviation field. I will graduate with A&P License if everything goes well, for those who know what it is. I don't know if that will help but it allows me to work on airplanes at airports(mechanical work) right out of high school.

I want to go into medicine and get into a school with 7 year BS/MD program but reading all posts on here about them, my chances look nearly impossible. Specifically, I want to know if I am a match or close to a match for the BS/MD programs at Sophie Davis and Union College. I am not limited to those, but I want to know specifically about those, but info. on others would be appreciated. I am looking for the lower tier BS/MD programs because I already messed up my chances for the top tier ones.

Also, please give me your recommendations on what to work on to improve my chances to get into this program. I know I have limited time left, but any suggestions would be very helpful. Thank you!

You should specify which particular program you are looking at.

Stat wise, that SAT is really gonna hurt - especially if you apply to something like HPME or PLME

Thanks for the reply. I am looking for the 7 year BS/MD program in schools like Sophie Davis, Union College, George Washington U, Drexel in particular, but other lower tier schools with this program are also of interest.

bump can anyone help me out?

Def up those SAT scores and try to get some clinical experience… volunteer @ hospital?
It’s cool that you go to a school that’s specifically oriented to a field… the only problem is that the field isn’t medicine :/

Thank you for the advice. Yeah I guess I chose the wrong school but nothing I can do about it now =(

Anyone else? Am I close to being able to get into the schools that I have listed for the BS/MD program?

I definitely feel that the first step towards getting recognized by any accelerated program (even those that belong to a lower tier, like you mentioned) is working on those SAT scores. The majority of applicants who apply to these type of programs, regardless of the reputation of the undergraduate institution, maintain stellar stats. So the caliber of the program is irrespective of the kind of students who get accepted in this case. In other words, the competition is drop dead fierce. 0__o

Based on the ECs that you’ve posted, it might be a good idea to try to work on this one aspect (SATs) starting now, seeing as that is the most control you have over your entire profile at this point. Perhaps you should try to aim for a 1450+ on math and critical reading?

When you get to writing your personal statements on the applications, be sure to try your best in explaining why you want to be a doctor, and the experiences you’ve had in the past that validate this desire

Also, if you haven’t already, look up this book on Amazon…

Medical School from High School: The College Applicant’s Guide to Medical School Early Admission Programs
by A.M. Ilyas MD

It provides a comprehensive list of accelerated programs around the country (although some listed are a bit outdated and unspecific in certain requirements for admission). But at least it will give you a good idea of the requirements set by all programs and resources for you to get more information. The first half of the book provides some helpful tips as well, so that should help you in improving your profile before you start the admissions process (tips on interviewing, extra curriculars, essays, etc.)…

Don’t let anyone tell you that admission is impossible. If you make the effort, your bound to get something out of this endeavor…if not bs/md, then a higher SAT score and an improved college profile = more scholarship money = happy parents = happy you!
yay!

haha very well said dash- and yes I have that book it’s a nice introduction to what getting in to BS/MD programs is all about. I might be reading it again very soon!
