Chances for a B student

Hi
I am a B student. Im in tenth grade wanting to go to a boarding school for my junior year. I play ice hockey and I've been playing for eight years. I haven't yet taken the SSAT or PSAT so I'm not sure where I score in those. But for CMTs I always got advanced for everything so I'm assuming I will score high on thos etests when I do take them. I go to one of the best public high schools in the state (Amity) so I'm in extremely advanced classes. I fell in love with Andover but also I love Hotchkiss and Taft. I will need a lot of financial aid considering I have 6 siblings in my family. One goes to Brown and the other goes to Hopkins so between both of those, it doesn't leave much money for me. What do you think my chances are of getting into these schools or what I can do to ensure that I get into these schools.

Ok so I see that a ton of people are reading this. Can someone please just help so I know if I’m wasting my time with this or not.

Playing a sport for that long of a time will help you, but if you are a b student these schools look for A’s. Being at a very competitive school will help a bit. You will need to do well on the PSAT or SSAT though.

Thanks! Anyone else have some input???

I play hockey too. My team plays at the AA, and AAA level. Who do you play for. Have you spoken to/been recruited by the coaches at the schools?

Contact the hockey coach at those schools, and REALLY promote your hockey skills. The hockey may get you in.

A bigger question for you is: do you really want to be in an uber-competitive academic setting, if you are a B student now? The academic pressure at the top schools is VERY VERY INTENSE. Your performance relative to your peers in the school matters for college admissions.

DS had top SSAT scores & grades at his previous school. Now at his elite BS, he barely sleeps to keep up with the academic demands. Be careful of what you wish for…

There is a range of boarding schools which excel in hockey. Do some research. Consider an all-boys school like Avon or Salisbury. Consider some of the hidden gems. Good luck to you!

Lots of good hockey players choose Lake Forest Academy or Cranbrook.

I’m just gonna put out there that I’m a girl so there’s no confusion. So I can’t really go to an all boys school. : )

Oh - oops, sorry about that, Hockeycrazy! You’ve named some selective schools so far. You may be able to do a search on boardingschoolreview to find other schools which offer ice hockey, to broaden your list and increase your chances, if you are really hoping to go to boarding school.

If you are a B student and applying to these top boarding schools, you need to be really good at hockey and promote it

Look into Cranbrook Kingswood! They have an awesome girls hockey program. You can find them on the boardingschoolreview.com website.

Take a look at Berkshire as well. They have beautiful new hockey facilities, and the rest of their campus is gorgeous as well. It is not as competitive as some of the other schools: 30% admit rate. Also, they have a pretty good endowment, and 30% of their students get FA.

It will definitely be difficult to get into Hotchkiss or Taft with B’s, but hockey is obviously pretty big in the prep school world. Being a girl hockey player myself, I know that it definitely helps during the application process. If you haven’t already, I would contact the coaches, send them videos/stats, and if you’re playing close enough to either school, you can even ask them to come watch. Good luck!

P.S. Taft & Hotchkiss’s girls’ varsity hockey teams are actually both pretty good this year!
