I REALLY WANT To ATTEND UMICH!!!! AND CARNEGIE MELLON

you're a junior and you're already applying to college?! that's weird haha but i'll try my best to be of any help

first off, are you just taking honors classes or are you taking AP classes as well? honestly, if you're not taking any AP classes, your chances at all those schools are almost none. this is especially true because of your high SAT score and high GPA; colleges will question why you didn't challenge yourself with your classload. your extracurriculars are very nice; i think if you took AP classes (and i mean quite a few like at least 6 or so) then your chances are pretty much excellent at all of those.

each of those schools have little quirks about them in terms of admissions. berkeley takes such a few percentage of out of state (i think around 95% of their student body is in state) so it's insanely tough to get into from out of state (the kids i know who go there got debate scholarships for being top 30 nationally etc). michigan is a good shot if you're an underrepresented minority and especially if you apply early. uva is difficult to say as in carnegie mellon. uchicago has somewhat of a self selecting applicant pool; it's one of those "weird" quirky schools that many students are turned off before even applying (their motto is "where fun comes to die"; i'm not bashing uchicago by any means, however; it still is an amazing school). hopkins is a good shot if you apply early decision; i had a friend get in this year with less stats than you (except he took 3 ap classes his junior year and was taking 4 his senior year). columbia is tough as in dartmouth; there's no way around it and you can't really say anyone has a "good chance". those schools have so many applicants that are all of top caliber so some random stuff happens and it's way too hard to call. i don't really know much about notre dame and vanderbilt isn't very difficult to get into early decision (a couple of my friends got in with stats way lower than yours; again they each took about 6 ap classes total between their junior and senior years). carnegie mellon is another self selecting applicant pool but still very competitive.

hope i helped you out some bit. i'd say your best shot out of all of those is vanderbilt early decision and maybe michigan (if applied early).

As long as you challenge yourself and take the "most difficult courseload available", you will be fine. You do need to take SAT IIs for most of those schools, an should probally retake your ACT, (unless you only submitt your SAT I, which is really good).

Derek is right, each school has its own little quirks, but they make predicting acceptance almost impossible. Each school will look at your application--test scores, ECs, GPA, essays, recommendations, volunteer work, work experience, etc. as a puzzle to figure out who you are. If they like what they see, you will become accepted. Test scores aren't everything, but having strong ones will certainly give you an extra boost.

But dispite all that, I would say that you would get into U Mich. It has a 64% acceptance rate, and it's acceptance policies are much different than what I described above. I have a friend who works at the admissions office, as well as many teachers who are alumnus of there and they pretty much told me that they type all of your stats into a computer--SATs, class rank, recalc. GPA, etc.--and then you get a number. If you are above a certain number you will most likley be accepted, unless your essays are terrible, and if you are below they will look at your entire application like the other schools. (I am not putting down U Mich, but it is much easier to get into that Cornell, UVA, Johns Hopkins, and other schools on your list.)

And despite what people tell you, timing doesn't really matter. It depends on the individual and their credentials, not when they apply. I applied 1 day before the deadline and was accepted 3 weeks later (and my stats aren't fablous--29 ACT, 4.16 GPA, blah blah blah blah). I heard back before people from my school who applied 2 months before I did, two who have lower test scores and one who has higher).

So...after all that, all I can say is that you need to work your hardest your senior year and put the more passion into your essays than you even knew you had. Good luck!

emilyanne does make an interesting point about the time of application though; i was just going off of what other people say about michigan. i got in yesterday and i applied with maybe 4 days left with the deadline (3.45 gpa and 2140 SAT). and i also didn't think about what classes your high school offers haha

I am taking the "most difficult courseload available" All AP's and honors except Art and Latin 1 ( I've Already done 3 years of Spanish so this is my 4th year of a foreign language) By the end of High School i will have taken over 14 AP Classes and the of the classes are honors. I will also have reached the "Distinguished Achivment" Program. Thanks for all the Feedback!

oh, well then. why didn't you say so? i'd say you have a legit shot at almost anywhere. apply with confidence and best of luck.

Well, all I can say is forget about your ACT. With a 2200 on your SAT and a 3.7+ unweighed GPA, your chances with Michigan are very good, especially if you apply before October.

whats a brownie

a brown guy? bump.....

damn i thought this thread was about weeeeeed
