Chances for a Canadian resident

Personal:

-Ethnicity: Asian - Korean
-Came to Canada in grade 4
-Nothing really special..

Academics:

GPA: 3.89 unweighted in a local public high school where nobody has ever gone to an ivy league school (or any top 25 US college for that matter..)

Rank: No exact rank, but approximately top 5%

SAT: 800M+670CR+720WR = 2190.. retaking October, but I dont expect any dramatic increases.

SAT II:
Math IIC - 800
Chemistry -760
Biology - 750
World History - 680

AP:
Biology - 5
Chemistry - 5
Psychology - 5

Extra-Curricular's:
- Leader & rhythm guitarist of a hard-rock band. Have recorded an album and sold quite a few copies. This is my main EC that I entend on elaborating it on my essay.
- Biology lab assistant at a local university (150 hours?)
- Volunteer at an internet service provider for seniors and the impoverished (200 hours)
- School District Student Leadership Council (80 hours?)
- Student Council ( Grade 11 representative )
- Part-time job as a softball umpire (100 hours?)
- and other various EC's that are not worth listing on my app

I guess my essay topic is interesting and unique, but nothing is for sure and I don't really have too much confidence in my creative writing skills

Recommendations will probably be good, but I'm not sure since none of my teachers have ever written a recommendation letter to US Colleges (Canadian universities don't require any recs)

I've posted this in the Chances forum, but I'd be interested to hear what my chances are for Michigan.

Major is biology and I plan on applying near the end of September

well if you get in, there are asians everywhere around here

hmm?? Sorry, I didn't understand your last post.

i don't know enough about current stats for michigan to comment on your chances. i met a number of canadians at ann arbor and always wondered why they didn't go to mcgill or queens if their stats were good enough for UofM, considering the reputations of the schools and the super cheap tuition for canadians. i also wondered why students would come to UofM from california when they could have gone to Ucal. don't get me wrong, Michigan is a great school, but it is pricey for OOS students.

My stats are more than good enough for McGill or Queens. I'm applying to keep my options open.

nice to hear. then it will be no tragedy if you don't get into michigan. from what i hear, mcgill and michigan are similar in various ways (harvard of canada, harvard of the midwest). best advice is to apply early. good luck.

Sucky thing about Umich is that for international apps, it depends greatly on whether you're applying for financial aid or not.

Asian works against you for the affirmative action, too, I think...but it doesn't look like you need the help. ;)

Other than those sticking points, I'd say you've got a very good chance.
