Chances for a congressional page for columbia ed (will chance back!!!)

Hello. Thanks for taking the time to look my profile over and chance it. I'm a rising senior, and just finished my 5 month term in Washington as a US Congressional Page, where I worked on the House floor each day and worked directly with the members of the Democratic side. Please chance me for ED at Columbia (I'm trying to decide between doing that and applying EA to Yale)

[li] SAT I (breakdown): CR: 700 M: 770 W: 790 T: 2260 (will take again in october, i've been getting 750+ in practice tests in CR, for some reason im better at the CR section than i used to be...)
[/li]

[li] ACT: (am taking in September, my practice tests I've been taking indicate that I will at least get a 34, and probably a 35, either way, I'm not too worried b/c my SAT is decent enough.)
[/li]

[li] SAT II: US History: 760 Math Level I: 750 Math Level II: 710 Latin: 710 (don't have time to retake for ED)
[/li]

[li] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[/li]

[li] Weighted GPA (4.0 for standard classes, 4.5 for honors, 5.0 for AP): 4.5, highest you can get, I've taken the most rigorous course load available and gotten straight As, including my grades at US House Page School
[/li]

[li] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1 or 2/50, school doesn't rank though
[/li]

[li] AP (place score in parenthesis): World: 5 Chem: 4, (Comp, Calc AB, Microecon, US History: N/A) Will have 11 total APs come senior year 4 of which are self studied.
[/li]

[li] Senior Year Course Load: AP Latin, Calc BC, Lit, Bio, and Euro; also chorale and senior seminar (required)
[/li]

[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit (I was notified that I had been selected, my counselor said that my PSAT of 223 is far above my home state's average for National Merit Semi Finalist, so I think I will get that hopefully at least, if not finalist)
[/li]

[li] Major Awards Continued: US Congressional Page Program, promoted to work in the more esteemed position of cloakroom page, a position which only 6 pages are selected to work in (1/64 in Nation and only few to none are selected from each state) (spend whole semester working in DC and attending school in the top floor of the library of congress at the US House Page School.)
[/li]

[li] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Recycling President and Service Prefect (started school's can and bottle recycling program), Author/Creator of Cookbook raising money for Boys' and Girls' Club, Founder and President of Homework Assistance Initiative (tutoring program in County Library, serving the inside the beltline area of my city), Varsity Tennis, Actor with substantial part in each fall school play, member of school Show Choir and Chorale. President of Teen Advisory Board at Library. Dorm Food Committee while paging.
[/li]

[li] Job/Work Experience: State Gov Page (Senate and House), US House Page, Dry Cleaners Customer Service Rep., Boys' and Girls' Club Volunteer, Internship at prominent political think tank, only high school intern
[/li]

[li] Volunteer/Community service: already mentioned above, about 300-400 total hours by mid senior year most likely, and service-learning trip to dom. rep. (i sponsor a child there).
[/li]

[li] Awards: NHS member, Headmaster's List, Physical Education Award...?
[/li]

[li] School Type: Private, Religiously Affiliated, Really good with prestigious southern schools: Emory, Duke, and Vandy (3 full rides to vandy out of class of 50 last year), but ivies are not as common, but we've had a couple go
[/li]

[li] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[/li]

[li] Gender: Male
[/li]

[li] State: North Carolina
[/li]

[li] Income Bracket: Weird Divorce Situation. Primary Custodian gets full fin aid. Secondary would not receive any fin aid.
[/li]

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None
[/li]

(BTW i'm applying to safety schools and match schools because I know that the odds are against me, but I didn't put them on here because they're not really a concern and a waste of your valuable time.)

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING TIME TO CHANCE ME! I'LL CHANCE BACK IF YOU WANT!

(if you have any questions, please do not refrain from asking in your post)

I would say you have a fairly decent chance- I’ve seen people with similar stats with yours getting in. (Columbia values GPA a lot from what I have heard) As trite as it may sound write a really good why Columbia essay  chance back please http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1168605-chance-me-stanford.html</a></p>

I’m really not familiar w/ this page thing, could you explain?

<a href=“Redirect Notice”>Redirect Notice;

the above link has all the info about it (we’re salaried workers of the house by the way :D)

Above average chance for Columbia if you ED. You application definantly doesn’t ahve any apparent weak links (which is more than I can say for mine). Seeing as you have so mnay EC’s make sure that you include all of the ones where your leadership is evident, especially since you are going into polyschi (i’m gussing). You’re going to a great school regardless.

Chance me: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1168384-chances-couple-toptier-other-colleges.html</a></p>

Looking at your activities and the numbers, I’d say you have a superb shot at Columbia. The essays will be the thing that make or break your application, so spend time on them.

Academics: SAT could be better, would place in “strong” category if you got 2300+. SAT IIs aren’t good, but prob. won’t be a deal breaker. GPA is good considering course rigor. overall, academics are decent.

ECs: Strong. Very strong leadership and interesting activities such as authoring a cook book. You stray from the cookie-cutter involved in random clubs applicant which is a positive. And the US Page Program is probably regarded well.

Columbia is the second most selective university and admissions to Columbia seem to be a bit random. However you are a viable candidate. Just don’t be surprised if you’re deferred or rejected, it’s somewhat hard to predict for schools like Columbia. But yeah, low/mid reach, wonder why others from your school have not gotten into ivies as much.

Hey fellow political enthusiast =] I’d love to keep in touch during results times to see how we fare. I have a few close friends of mine who were in the Page Program (one was a cloakroom page as well) and they all got into amazing schools. The cloakroom page, specifically, got into HYPS…obviously not a direct relationship but you should feel confident you’ll get into a good school. Focus on the experience in one of your essays… I think he wrote about the conversations he overheard in the cloakroom in a unique way. Definitely ED to Columbia and I think you have an amazing shot.

ED to columbia- good shot if you get over 2300 on the sat. solid ECs and high class rank will help. just remember that any ivy is a crapshoot. good luck.

You definitely have a great chance at Columbia - Your EC’s and volunteer experience are stupendous! adn your awards are definitely good too - NICE! Also, your SAT score is pretty solid - i don’t even think you ahve to take the act because of your sat score - but if you do - good luck. i’m taking it for the first time then too.

GOOD LUCK! you definitely have a solid chance. Make sure you write a great GREAT GREAT essay and you should be in!

Chance me back? Thanks! :]

@Whartonitis I would love to keep in touch, I’ll private message you soon: also, nice job on starting the 5 day leadership conference. I’m just getting involved with YDA and saw that on FB, and then I realized that you organized that! :D

Basing this off of my countless hours of stalkingthe Columbia decision forums I believe that you have a good chance (3:4) of getting accepted. The only weaknesses I see in your application are your sat 2 scores bc accordingto my Princeton review book that sat math 2 score is below the 75th percentile. However I also know that columbia doesn’t require three sat subject test scores. Might you consider submitting your highest two and maybe Latin depending on the percentage?

Oh and chance me back please?

I would say you have a more than average chance of getting it. Your stats are very solid, minus your SAT IIs which are a little questionable compared to the rest. Your ECs are really solid as well and aren’t too widespread…like mine :(

Overall: I’d say high match/ low-mid reach

Bumppppppppppppppp

Very interesting experience (I have a similar one in Europe right now!)

Your grades and SATs seem solid, so with the ED boost and the uniqueness of the page AND your other ECs, I’d say you have a pretty good shot.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1168876-chances-duke-northwestern-notre-dame.html</a></p>

You have a very nice resume for a college. A congressional page was my summer math teacher, and he was from Harvard :). Columbia gives tons of financial aid too (I remember reading somewhere that it gave the most) and if you can wow them with an essay you stand a very good chance. Nobody is a match to Ivies, but if you ace your essays/interview you will be near the top.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1167916-too-high-just-right-chance-me-please-will-chance-back-2.html</a></p>

Your stats are very good. Getting in to the ivy league is pretty much a crapshoot for anyon, but I still think you ave a good chance of getting in :)

Thanks for chancing me :)

I’d say definitely retake SAT for a better CR.
Also, your US History & Math 1s are really solid, I’d say that you’re probably better off not submitting your Math 2 or Latin because they weight you down in comparison.
Have you considered the ACT at all? There’s still time to take it before ED deadlines and see how it goes.
Your GPA/Rank/ECs are all extremely solid.
Good luck!

Very good chances at Columbia, but you should really consider other schools, too. I’m just wondering–is there a specific reason you want to attend Columbia?

Chance me back please!
