Chances for a CS Major

Hi I'm a junior planning to apply at UIUC as a CS major and I was just wondering if I even stand a chance. I did quite poorly in my first 2 years of high school and my GPA is rather low because of that. :(

Race: Chinese Second Generation

SAT I: CR/W/M 650/600/710 1960 Total. Waiting on my results for the March SAT where my total should be at least 2100.
SAT II: Planning on taking Math I and Math II in June.
ACT: Planning to take in May.
GPA: 3.6 UW 3.87 W

Current AP Classes: Computer Science and US History
AP Classes Scheduled for Next Year: Physics and Calculus BC

Class Rank: Top 15%

EC:

American Computer Science League
Technology Student Association
Volunteer at CentraState Healthcare System as a website administrator for one of their health awareness programs.
Founder of a now inactive forum dedicated to teaching others web development (HTML, CSS, JS, PHP, SQL, etc)

I am also planning on interning for Northpoint Business Solutions over the summer as part of their development department.

I think you have a pretty good chance. UIUC doesn’t really care about the writing section of the SAT. Also I don’t think UIUC takes into account SAT II scores. For your other schools, do not take both Math I and Math II. It is a waste of time. I recommend taking Math II and maybe Chemistry or Physics.

I think you have a good chance, especially with your CS related extracurriculars. Are you out of state? I have a theory UIUC is more willing to accept out of staters b/c they pay more  I’m out of state, have your exact unweighted and weighted GPA, have zero CS experience, and I still got in for CS O.O I’ve also noticed some in-state people on here who have better stats than me, and they got deferred from the College of Engineering… so it may be more competitive for in-staters. Just a theory of mine, don’t take my word on it, I still think you have a pretty good chance either way :)

I’m also a girl and got a 33 on the ACT, so I guess that helped… so I would also recommend getting your test scores up :)

Your GPA isn’t as bad as you think. I got into UIUC’s EE department with a 3.4 GPA and 2190 SAT. (I’m also a Chinese American Male lol, but I’m first generation)

What I do suggest is taking a more rigorous course load. Not sure how much that helped me, but I was 6 IB classes Junior year and 7 IB classes Senior year. Some more extracurriculars couldn’t hurt either. A leadership position would probably look good along with your others.

Thanks for the help guys. I actually got my March SAT scores back today and I ended up getting 760 Math 620 CR 670 Writing. Only reason I didn’t get an 800 in math was cause I messed up the counting one of the questions >.>

@lirpaux: Yes I am in fact out of state. I’m from New Jersey.
