I received word from Tulane today, and I was deferred until their spring admissions. It's so disheartening, I thought that I would be accepted during EA.
They haven't seen my new test scores though, which I hope will make a big impact.

Can I get chances for Spring admissions please?

3.55 UW/3.65 W
30 ACT (was 26)
Good ECs (lots of community service, varsity athlete, but no real leadership, I've also held jobs consistently since Freshman year)
From Nebraska

btw, i didn't test as well as you with your latest ACT and i got in with a scholarship and entrance to the honors program. I'd be shocked if they don't accept you.

Good luck with anything and I hope to see you in NOLA next Fall.

call them...it really makes no sense that you were deferred...it seems that people with your stats are given nice scholarships...and how many applicants do they get from Nebraska????

Yes, definitely call them. My guess is the deferral is a result of the 26 ACT - it may be they didn't have the 30 ACT when the decision was made... Keep in mind they get some 15k-20k applications and with multiple scores coming something may have gotten misplaced.

Tulane is not a deadline driven admission office. They will review changes and make decisions at any time...not like some universities where after a deferral you need to wait until April.

Besides it will show interest....which is always good.

Thanks for the input everyone, however, since it was a deferral and not an outright denial, the letter said to send in any new test scores/transcripts/etc. before April and they'll review their decision. So hopefully they'll do exactly that.

I do know that they didn't receive my 30 ACT before they made the decision (I didn't receive my score until Dec. 16th!). Also, when I called them on the 18th, they said that my latest score was from April (the 26). This confuses me, because they were my #1 recipient on my ACT choices!

Should I just follow the routine and send in my test scores later and wait until regular decision, or should I call them right away and send in my test scores?

My son had a similar situation to yours last year. He applied with his SAT scores EA and was deferred. He received his ACT score and 1st quarter grades and sent them in and was admitted with a scholarship a few weeks later. I'd call them now to make sure they've received your new scores, tell them how interested you are in Tulane and ask them to re-evaluate your application. You should hopefully hear better news.

I also urge you to call them...don't be afraid to ask to be "reviewed". It's more proactive than waiting on them to see your new scores.

I would call first, then follow up with an email/letter advising them your new scores, your continued interest etc.

I know my own son often tends to wait for things to happen rather than taking action...usually taking action pays off and certainly you will feel like you have done what YOU can do to manage the situation better.

I've found Tulane's admission office to be quite friendly and helpful....go for it and good luck.
PS I was born in Nebraska--it's a great place to be from. And someone above was right. I'm sure they don't get too many Nebraskans heading down there, all the more reason with your new test scores for them to want you:)

Well, I took everyone's advice and gave them a call a few moments ago.. they said that there was nothing that they could do. I told them there was a delay on the ACT sending my test scores, and asked if they had received it, etc. and they said that they had not. They estimated that it'll take 3 weeks or so for the ACT to send the test scores, and a further 3 weeks to make a decision. I also indicated that Tulane was my first choice school to which I received no response.

I did indicate on my application that I was taking the ACT in October, and they were also on my list of schools for the ACT to send my score report to. I wish they had waited a few more days to make their decision!

If I get in this second time around though, it'll be worth it. But at the moment, I'm embarrassed because all I've been talking so much about Tulane!

walt 99--
Even though you may not feel like the call accomplished much, it's good that you did it.

Now, to make it "official" in your file, send a letter as a follow up to Admissions. Include with it an unofficial copy of your ACT scores, if you have it. Also mention that it's your number one choice, etc. It's important to document this--it can only help you.

Please keep us posted on the outcome and good luck!!

Don't be embarassed...Tulane is a selective school and wants good students, as others have noted, certainly for the rankings but also for the quality of the education in classroom, where students need to be able demonstrate an ability to learn at a certain pace, as well as learn from each other. While some might believe that by scoring higher on a retake you're only as smart (or not) as when you scored lower, the fact is that not everyone who retakes can score higher...by scoring higher you've not only demonstrated you can perform at the higher level Tulane seeks, but you've demonstrated persistance as well...this will serve you well in the future, regardless of where you go to college.

But my guess is that you'll get into Tulane.
