chances for a double major in econ and CS?

Hey,

I was wondering what my chances are at CMU? I'm looking to double major in CS and Econ, but definately at least major in Econ, so how what would be the best way for me to go about doing it (in terms of applying to a school I'd be most likely to get into, and then transferring, etc.)? Is it even possible to do it in two radically different fields?

Also, would it be possible to do Mangement consulting or IT consulting from CMU? Do the good firms recruit there?

thanks

come on people, I know you all have opinions, and I'd like to hear them...

You really haven't done your homework, have you? Have you even looked at the CMU application? First of all, you need 3 SAT II's, so you'd better get on that fast. And nobody cares about the breakdown of your ACT math subscore.

You have a good class rank, so yay, and your school seems like a good one, so you've got that going for you. And your E/C's are quite good.

Econ is in H&SS, CS is it's own college (SCS), and business is in Tepper, while Management and Policy is in Heinz http://www.cmu.edu/academics/index.shtml

I know you're still thinking about getting INTO CMU, but this might be interesting if you like programming, math, and econ: http://business.tepper.cmu.edu/default.aspx?id=142109

So, take the SAT and SATII's, and actually look at the CMU application before you come asking vague questions. Your best chance at acceptance would be to apply for Econ and then hope that you can transfer into SCS; it won't be easy.

And yes, CMU has an excellent selection of recruiting firms/companies at every job fair.

If you go up to anyone at CMU and say you want a double major, they will literally laugh in your face (I've seen it). Double major in the same school has been done, but you will not sleep for four or five years while you work seventeen hour days with no weekends and miss every other class because your schedules overlap. Getting in is the easy part, I did, staying in is the challenge.

to the contrary I have a friend who graduated in 3 years with a CS major and Econ 2nd major and now works at microsoft...

the exception was that he was just a freaking genius....

Nah, you don't have to be a genius to do it ... (Okay, it's subjective)

What really is the hard part about CS + Econ majors is that CS has a hell lotta work compared to Econ ... but if you're prepared with a plan for your schedules everyday, then it's actually not that hard for a double major. But keep in mind, not many people can resist procrastinating ...

You should continue model UN to increase your chances.
