The view on this board is that if legacy is to give you any boost at all at Stanford, you must apply SCEA. Since your grandfather is an alum, you may want to consider the early action route.

curious_77- Would you mind explaining how the SCEA completely works. I understand the basics, but where does my grandfather fit into all of this?

Just that the people on this board, in quite a few threads, have come to the conclusion that legacy only helps your chances of admission to Stanford when you apply early. Your grandfather, being an alum, makes you a legacy. Thus, if you want to maximize your chances of admission, you may want to apply SCEA in order to reap any benefits of being a legacy. SCEA means that you can apply early to Stanford and receive your decision by mid-December, but you are not bound to attend. However, with a few exceptions, you may not apply early to any other college. Hope this helps. Good luck.

You're a farm boy...I'm a farm girl! Where are you from?
I'm applying to Swarthmore ED probably...

I'd say you have a good shot...Stanford legacy..wow! good luck!

If it were up to me, I would admit you just for using the verb "hoe" as in "hoe beets". Unfortunately, my opinion means nothing to Stanford. Your chances are not good--even with legacy status. Your application will be memorable for rarely read phrases such as "pick rock", "hoe beets", & "drive tractor". Please consider applying to Harvard, Yale & Princeton. Seriously.

honestly, you have above avergae chances with your EC's, connections to Stanford, GPA, and how you took the best and most advanced classes available... GL!

good chance, can't say for sure but use the legacy to ur advt

Cold Wind,
LOL. I couldn't stop laughing when you posted that. I guess it is all normal to me, but to others it probably sounds foreign. Here the word "hoe" is how you describe cleaning massive sugar beet fields with a garden hoe.

I guess I 'm confused too you say I have no shot at getting into Stanford, but yet tell me to apply to HYP? Maybe you are being sarcastic? lol. ahhhh...life on the farm. :)

hmb90. I'm straight from Idaho! I may live on a farm, but I'm no hick (as in no i don't wear cowboy boots, cowboy hats, etc.) :). Where are you from?

And thanks everyone for chancing me. I've thought of some things that i failed to mention, but thats alright. Thanks again.

b- your chances are not great at Stanford. It looks like your stats will be right in the middle of their applicant pool, of which they accept only 10%.

Your best chances to get in ANYWHERE Top 20 is to be yourself... emphasize the farm life. As the poster above notes, that will cause the adcom to like you, and remember you. Whether that's enough to get in over the 5000 applicants who are Student Body President/Valedictorian/Captain of XXX with 2250 SATs, and help audit the books for Mother Theresa's orphanage in Calcutta, I cannot say.

By stats alone, you are in the middle of the accepted pool at USNWR schools ranked 35-50.

Sorry, I did not intend to sound sarcastic. Nobody has great chances at HYP or Stanford. I just had a mental image of the admissions committees of each of the upper level Ivies reading your application and enjoying the refreshing lack of pretentiousness so much that they would all run for the "admit" stamp for your file. Gentle humor & genuine kindness create a type of disarming sincerity that just might get you admitted. Not likely, but it is "not likely" for many applicants with perfect everythings, as well. In short, your application will stand out & get noticed for all the right reasons.
P.S. I can't wait to read your book. I don't even want to imagine what verbs may apply to typical farm animal activity. You have a bestseller in you!
