Chances for a friend

OK, my friend wants to know her chances. I've told her countless times that this site isnt neccessarily a good indicator of true chances but she wants to know anyways. Shes a senior this year, and she wants to know for AMHERST.

GPA: 3.4 UW
SAT: 2360
SAT II - 750, 780, 800

she took the hardest possible courseload in school. i dont know her class rank but probably in the top 25%

EC:
MUN 10-12
JSA 10-12
Youth and Gov 11-12
Mock Trial 11-12
Library Advisory Board
Youth Action Council

no sports or mucis

teacher recs: really probably not amazing (not really liked by teachers)
GC recs: " "

Volunteer Hours: about 40 a year

ok, shoot

more stuff:

debate team all four years
founded young democrats club at school
member of schools gay straight alliance

She's in the same boat as I am: High Standardized Tests, Hardest Courseload, low GPA.

I have to say with kids like us, our admission basically comes down to
a) Teacher Recs
b) Essays

Tell her to invest a lot of time in her essays.

yea, i read her essays and they are verry verrry good

anyone? she wants to know on a scale of 1-10

very very good essays will DEF help. i think as long as the teacher recs don't talk bad about her, she'll be ok. No music/sport might be a problem... but for amherst I think she's fine...

I'd say 8ish

She has a good chance, no outstanding ECs but still if her essays/teacher recs are good...

make that 9ish, the SAT is too high to reject

it depends. if these teachers let it sorta show that they don't like her in the recommendations, then that could have a negative pull on the admissions decision. adcoms want people, not just high numbers.

anyone else?

I have to agree with squiggle. It would be an 7-8 if the recs were good, but if the teachers let it show that she's not liked, then it would go down to a 4-6.

=(

just a question: why do people think they can trick everyone by saying its for a friend?

treble: Why would it matter?

Plus: It's probably because people are willing to be more brutally honest about someone if they're not talking directly to them.

...i have no idea why it would matter. touche sahin, touche

My pleasue. ;)

well, i know people like follow up stories and ED decisions came out a long time ago but I thought I would post anyways.

Unfotunately, she was rejected. Major loss, but now she is over it. Shes has her fingers crossed for Carleton now!
