My friend wants to know his chances at Stonybrook and any other state schools in New York and the east. He has an 83 overall average, and 1730 on his sats. However he failed math 11th grade and is taking it in summer school. He also failed the chemistry regents and is taking summer school for that as well. However he did not fail chem. His ecs include teaching younger kids karate in the phillipines, volunteering at a local hospital, and a job as a waiter at a country club for the past yr. He also had another job for three yrs, starting from the beginning of 8th grade, teaching kids karate. What do you think his chances are at good state schools in NY. Hes had depression over this and has contemplated suicide because his parents might ship him back to the phillipines if he doesnt get into a good college. What do you think?

bump!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Um... I know that there are many other better state schools than Stony Brook. Um, he's going to have to show RAPID improvement for Stony Brook, but it really depends what he wants to major in... just don't write on the app that he contemplated suicide...

I'm not expert, but if he brought his SAT up by about 50-100 points and wrote a letter explaining why he failed the courses (assuming there's a reason besides being lazy), then I'm pretty sure he'd have a chance. Also, his essays should be creative and focus on his passion for karate (the teaching of).
