Chances for a hopeful high school student :) at UVA, Cornell, Colgate, URochester...

Hi!! I'm a junior at a highly-ranked public school in MA and I'd just like to see what my chances are at some schools :)

Schools i'm interested in: UVA, Cornell, SUNY Binghamton, Colgate, URochester, UMASS Amherst, McGill, Johns Hopkins University

AP Classes- Biology- 5, APUSH-4.
Next year i'm taking AP Chem, AP Composition, and AP Euro
and senior year I plan on taking 4-5 AP's
so that's 9 AP's overall--most rigorous courseload offered
everything not AP was an honors class

UW GPA- 3.7, Weighted- 4.24
I know the UW is rather low, I had a tough time adjusting to AP classes sophomore year :/

ACT- 30 (I plan on re-taking this junior year)
SAT- haven't taken yet- will this year
SAT II- 710 on Biology (I'm going to take more next year)

Extra-curriculars

Violin:
I am in school orchestra (first chair). Grades 5-present
New England Conservatory youth orchestra. Grade 10-present
I've taken private lessons from grade 4-present

Piano Lessons: Kindergarten-present.

Guitar: I teach myself? I've played for 4 years. It's more of a leisurely thing so I'm not sure if it counts

Sports: I play tennis in the spring and Field Hockey in the fall

Clubs: Microfinance Club- I'm Secretary
Leo Club, Math Club, Peer Tutoring, UNITE (leadership)

Volunteer Stufff: I volunteer at a hospital 4 hours a week during the summer and I occasionaly go to Project Just Because. I also Tutor 150+ hours so far

Leadership: I'm on student council and Secretary of Microfinance club. I was chosen to attend the START leadership conference and won the Peter J. Baltren award there. I was chosen to be a part of the club UNITE in my school which is another leadership club

I plan on majoring in Biology.
If anyone has any other ideas on schools to apply to they'd be much appreciated!! I'm afraid I may not have enough safety schools/match schools.
Thanks so much

I will chance back by the way  just post the link to the thread if you wish :)

Okay… Bottom line. Everything looks pretty good except academics. Just work on that part. Also, you need something to set you apart from others. I know many, many people who do the very similar things you do.
Other than that, you have good chances for your schools
My credentials: my dad went to UVA. Great school. Good essay will help greatly as well

^thanks! I’m hoping my GPA will rise with more AP classes. my goal is 4.4.

ap sophomore year? at my school you cant till junior year, and all around me same. what state do you live in? but it looks good! i wish i did that good

^yeah haha my school offers a lot of APs, starting really early. They used to have a pre-AP science in freshman year but they got rid of it a couple years ago. I live in MA! thanks :)

oh i wanna go to school in ma, hopefully i can, i slacked off my first 2 years and i have 2.7 gpa but i know i can do way better and i am going to try really hard junior and senior year. it was mainly homework.

To be honest, if you are planning to major in bio, a 710 SAT II is a tad bit low for schools like UVA/Cornell/Colgate etc. so you may want to study that over the summer, but it shouldn’t kill you.
The GPA is fine, the UW is a bit low but the courseload makes up for it.
Definitely (if you are really talented) send tapes of you playing piano/violin/guitar etc.!
You are a bit short on clubs but as long as you can show passion for the ones you are in right now in your essays that’s fine.
Take more SATIIs (you want 3 over 750+, that’s optimal for a top tier school), up your ACT by 3 points, and I would say you are a competitive applicant anywhere!

Lacrosse7: yeah, it’s never too late to improve! GPA’s can go up… my brother started similar to you, got his gpa up to a 3.1 and is now attending Syracuse University :)

Lolcowz: Yeahh haha i was really dissapointed in the SAT II score. I may retake next year. I was hoping a 5 on the AP test would make up for it… I’m really conflicted on sending tapes for music. I would for violin probably, but i’m just afraid it wouldn’t be good enough? I am talented… or i’d like to think i am. haha. i’m just not sure! It could never hurt an application, right?

bumppppp. i’d like to hear more opinions if possible! any other ideas for schools?

one more try… Bump!
