Chances for a Junior? Please? Desperate?

Hello people of CC...
I've been looking at CC a lot recently as I'm really worried about getting into a good college. I finally decided to make an account and ask your opinions in the universities I can get into/what I need to do to get into. Currently I am a second semester Junior. My Weighted GPA is a 3.98 and my UW Gpa is about a 3.38 or so..

SAT: M - 760 CR - 700 W - 730
Total: 2190

I;m and Indian male(not being racist or anything, because people sometimes accuse others for saying stuff like this. Just putting it in there for ethnic diversity purposes in colleges and what not...) currently live in Texas, but am only in the top 20% at my school, which means I don't have the automatic admission into A&M/UT. Could you please report my prospective chances at the following Universities...
If there is a school that you all think is good and I have not posted but I have a chance of attending, please post it. Thanks!! :)

I have a decent amount of Extracurriculars, including National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Spanish Honor Society, and other such stuff. I want to major in either Engineering(Industrial to be specific, but am open to new ideas) or Finance/Economics. Or a double major in Engineering and Finance.

Schools:
Texas A&M College Station
UT Austin
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
DUKE(DREAM SCHOOL! REALLY HIGH REACh I know but is there any chance of making it? Essay or other such things)
PENN State(Dream School#4)
Washington and Lee
Boston University
RICE...highly doubt it but still :)
Carnegie Mellon
UNC - Chapel Hill
Purdue
Colorado School of Mines
Rutgers University
Virginia TECH/Georgia Tech(Dream School #2,#3 respectively)
NYU
Howard? I've heard of it, but is it good?
any University of California's that ya'll suggest?

I know I have a lot of Dream School's listed, but Duke is my upmost Dream School. The other's are just the OOS one's I would love to attend if accepted.

Is there a good safety school that I can apply too?

Thank-you so much for your time for reading this, and I look forward to reading your responses.

bumpY BUMPY BUMP: )

bump this thread woo

You seem well qualified. You have good test scores, but your gpa isn’t quiite as good. Regardless, I think you will make it into most of the schools, and even some reaches if you have good recs and right really good essays. ECs are OK, but make sure a couple stand out as true interests.

Reaches:
Duke
Carnegie Mellon
Rice
Some UCs
UT Austin
NYU
UNC

Chance me back please! and good luck!

Texas A&M College Station - Match
UT Austin - Match/Safety
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo - Match/Safety
DUKE - Reach. Write a damn good essay, take on some more APs/ECs if possible.
PENN State(Dream School#4) - Match/Safety
Washington and Lee - Match
Boston University - Match/Safety
RICE -
Carnegie Mellon - High Match/Low Reach
UNC - Chapel Hill - Match
Purdue - Match
Colorado School of Mines - Match
Rutgers University - Match
Virginia TECH/Georgia Tech - Match
NYU - Match
I would recommend UC Berkeley or UCLA for you. They’d be a bit reach-y because you’re out of state, but you could really afford to be more ambitious. You have a strong resume. You’re a bit overqualified for some of the schools you’re applying to.

Thank you so much guys…
anymore suggestions?
I’ll chance backk :D

Abarith, MizzDiva was extremely generous in their assessment of your chances above^. Here’s my opinion of your chances at the schools on your list:

Texas A&M College Station- match
UT Austin- high match
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo- low reach
DUKE(DREAM SCHOOL! REALLY HIGH REACh I know but is there any chance of making it? Essay or other such things) High reach, but apply anyway.
PENN State(Dream School#4) High match
Washington and Lee- Reach
Boston University- high match
RICE…highly doubt it but still- High reach
Carnegie Mellon- Mid reach
UNC - Chapel Hill- Low reach
Purdue- Match
Colorado School of Mines- Match
Rutgers University- Match
Virginia TECH/Georgia Tech(Dream School #2,#3 respectively)- VT- High match/ GT- Reach
NYU- Low reach
Howard? I’ve heard of it, but is it good? Don’t know
any University of California’s that ya’ll suggest? Not worth the OOS tuition with good engineering programs in-state.

Your SAT I scores are solid but your GPA and 20% decile ranking will make many of the schools on your list very high matches, low reaches, or even worse. Having good SAT I and (hopefully) SAT II scores will only offset a somewhat mediocre GPA so much. A well-written essay also will not make up much ground for a run-of-the-mill GPA. The fact that you want to major in engineering will make the applicant pools at the schools on your list that much more competitive. Make sure you also have a financial safety school on your list that you will also be happy attending. Good luck!

If you kick ass this year then Duke is more feasible but still HIGHLY unlikely.

Sorry ahead of time - I’m unfamiliar with some of your schools, so I’ll chance you for the ones I do know
DUKE - Reach. Your rank in your school seems to bring you down, but if you hold a leadership position or something in one of your extracurriculars, and with your solid SAT score, you’re within match range. If you do really well with your essays, I imagine you have a shot at it, as with any of these schools
Washington and Lee - Match
Boston University - Match
Rice - Reach
Carnegie Mellon - Reach
UNC - Chapel Hill - Reach. UNC is hard to get into these days :frowning: One of my really smart friends just got deferred and it was her number one.
Purdue - Match
Colorado School of Mines - Low match
Rutgers University - Match
Virginia TECH/Georgia Tech(Dream School #2,#3 respectively) - High match for both.
NYU - Match

I’d say apply to Berkeley, UCLA, and Irvine just for the heck of it. It really can’t hurt to apply. Don’t be discouraged by what people say - colleges are fickle :stuck_out_tongue: You never know where you might be accepted!

THank you sooo much for all the feedback everyone, you have no idea how much it helped…

Pretty much the only thing bringing me down is my freshman year…'cause I had like a 3.7W
Sophmore and 1st Semester Junior Year I’ve had higher than 4.1…
so would it be a better chance for me since its not a pretty much upward trend?
Also, is Northeastern Good for Engineering and do I have a shot at it?

What are your classes? APs and Honors make a HUGE difference when applying to colleges such as Duke. I can tell you my sister’s stats if you would like. My sister attended Duke Undergrad class of 2007

I take all honors/AP Classes except for foreign Language…meh :frowning:
Last year I took AP Computer Science…only got a 3 :frowning:
This year I’m taking/did take AP Stats, AP Psychology, AP English Lang, and AP U.S. History. and next year planning on taking about 4-5 more AP’s such as AP Economics and AP Government…
I would love to know your sister’s stats, although idk if it’s too personal!:o
Just a rough estimate of her GPA/Class Rank/Test Scores would be amazing if you could…thanks!

You are a very academically strong student. I think UT Austin, Texas A&M, and a few of those other schools would be happy to have you as a student! Your SAT score is amazing. With that said, you don’t seem to be involved in any arts, sports, or different ecs that step out of the academic area. Try taking on some of those things, you DONT have to be the best but at least you gave it a shot and who knows, maybe you’ll develop a passion out of it. Duke is a really tough school (esp Duke) but if you can write a brilliant essay and you show off that SAT score, I think you have a 50% shot. Best of luck:) Hope I get into Duke one day too!

Btw- thank you for replying to my post:)

Thanks Username
Males me feel alot better!
Any1 have any opinions on chances at NorthEastern?

for an out of state student i have heard it’s easier to get into an ivy than UNC. I have a 3.9, top 10% and a 1970 and did not make the cut

i think the biggest thing you should do is get your gpa up so you’re in at least top 10%

ahh wow…that stinks mm…I’m sorry
Thanks for the tip Via, but I only have 1 semester left (this one) and for top 10% at my school I would need around a 4.25 or so…so I don’t know what to do :frowning:
Any1 still got any suggestions on Northeastern?

sheesh, your school sounds insane. how many people are in your grade?

3000 total kids in school…~750-800 per grade…and its really really competitive…:frowning: so that’s why I’m confused for my options

holy *****. thats huge. my grade barely has 300 kids
