chances for a junior

Hey everyone, I know I may not exactly have the scores for Duke but what do you think my chances may be? Also, is there anything I could do during my senior year or over the summer to boost my chances?

location: Virginia
race/gender: white/female

GPA:
freshman- 3.56 (1 honors course)
sophmore- 3.64
junior- 3.78 (1 AP and 1 honors)
senior- decent schedule (1 AP)

SATs:
1060/1600 (560m and 500v)-- I know it's awful, I'm taking them again June 3, 2006 after my tutor and a ton of studying.

OTHER:
4 years of field hockey (possible captain)
1 year of soccer (sportsmanship award)
1 year of track and field
placed 1st in science fair
3 years of national honor society
2 years in DECA
85 hours+ of community service
internship at an elementary school (want to major in education)
played years on a soccer team outside of school (captain)

thanks!

You have a plausible chance but in my opinion, its not too great.

Duke heavily emphasizes people with HIGH GPA and standardized test scores, as well as those who ahve talents

ur extra curriculars are probably fine, but same as above High GPA and high standarized test scores would def help. I mean your GPA is aight, but i had gotten waitlisted and then accepted with a 3.96 UW GPA and a 1530/1600 scale for SATs. So the better the SAT scores, the higher chance you can get.

Not to be a negative nancy but only 2 APs/2 honors courses, that SAT score, and that GPA will not get you into Duke unless there's something huge working for you that you haven't made public (e.g. you're a top recruit or your dad is Roy Bostock). I think you might be setting yourself up for disappointment if you have your mind set on Duke or Duke-like schools in general; straight-A students from my high school class with SATs in the 1400s and 1500s were rejected early decision, and that was two years ago (Duke's only getting tougher). Sorry, I'm not trying to be a prick, I just think it's better to get realistic early on in the whole admissions process than to be rudely and sorely awakened to reality come May 1st.

hmm I got waitlisted then accepted with a 3.9 Weighted GPA and 1560/1600 SATs

I also think Duke might be a stretch

i was deferred and accepted with a 3.95 unweighted and a 1370/1600 SAT. Start writing your essays now, ask everyone and their mother to read it. Get awesome recommendations. I'd get two academic ones and one from a non-academic source (soccer or field hockey coach?). You'll also want to raise your SAT score prolly AT LEAST 200 points. Having said that, your schedule is kind of a concern, what with the lack of APs and whatnot (unless your school didn't offer very many of them). I'm not saying that all of this would guarantee you a spot, but it would definitely help your chances. Still, I'd say that Duke is currently a bit of a reach for you.

yeah... even though people get declined with higher gpas your gpa isnt going to be your main problem. Hopefully you have some good improvement next time on the SAT... Does your school not offer much in the way of honors and AP? because that schedule is the thing that seems like the biggest henderance to me personally (If you raise SATs).

Yea Duke will most def. be a stretch for ya...i took in all around 9 or 10 APs and honors classes

Apply to duke if you have your heart set on it, but make sure to include some less competitive colleges on your list that you really like, because duke is tough to get into.

If you can raise your test scores significantly and really showcase your uniqueness in your essays, you may have a chance. Hire a professional to take a look at them.

You really need to consider doing something unique this summer so you can showcase on your application. You also seem to be lacking in the leadership/initiative dept. (i.e. state president for DECA, starting a program for inner city youth etc.) Sports captainships are fine, but you need something to make you stand out.

Also, you'll be told over and over again when you go to elite colleges admissions offices that you should be taking the most rigorous curriculum available and succeeding in those classes. If you are taking all the AP, Honors, and advanced classes that you're school offers, you're doing fine - if not, you may have a problem.

All of this advice is not meant to discourage you, and I really encourage you to apply if Duke is what you want. In such a case, I would apply early decision, and you will put a slight edge on your application. But all in all, this is a definite reach unless you manage to pull off something impressive this summer.
