Chances for a legacy

I plan on applying ED to Duke, but if that doesn't work out (which is highly likely) my 1A school is Cornell and would certainly be happy going to either. I know many of you just went through the process of applying yourselves and I would be very greatful if you could evaluate my chances at Cornell based on your own personal experiences. (I'm also a legacy there if that makes much of a difference.)

GPA: 3.8w but good grade trend (3.5 frosh... 3.6 soph... 4.3 junior)
Class Rank: 20/210

SAT I- M: 670
CR: 790
W: 750

SAT II- US: 790
Bio: 750

AP- US His: 5 Bio: 5

ECs:
Basketball: 9-12
Cross Country:10-12 captain
National Honor Society: 12

So there it is. I would really appreciate any imput about my chances. Thanks.

work on getting some more ECs.

yeah. Anything besides that?

class rank is weak..20/210..very unlikely you get into cornell RD..you are barely in top 10% of class

what's your real GPA? i mean unweighted...and i think he's ok, especially if he's really good @ basketball...good scores if you're humanities oriented. your legacy wont help unless you apply ED, for the most part.

"your legacy wont help unless you apply ED, for the most part."

Why is that?

??????????

Some schools only give weight to legacy status if you apply ED.

wow, i did not know that.

This pretty much goes for any college or university... for the most part legacy only has an advantage during the early decision round because it is clearly the candidates first choice. If you want to see an example of this practice, Penn pretty much spells it out on their legacy applicant Q & A page http://www.alumni.upenn.edu/aca/faq.html#a2

Excerpt from the above site:
Q"Is there an advantage for legacies to apply Early Decision?"
A "Legacies who apply Early Decision maximize the benefit of their alumni tie. Since Early Decision is binding, however, it is only encouraged to apply early if Penn is the applicant's first choice institution."

I know this is a Cornell board, but Penn is very open about their legacy statistics, perhaps this will be of interest to you (the ED admission rate for legacy students at Penn for the Class of 09 was 48.6%)
