chances for a mediocre applicant

I really, really love this school. What are my chances for acceptance?

Male from Alabama

3.2 uw GPA taking mostly AP classes (11 AP/honors classes over 4 years)

5 on AP Lang and 3 on AP US History exam

30 on ACT (35 English, 32 reading, 28 science, 26 math)

I've been told I have a great essay but I won't say anything regarding that because I don't judge my own work (except I will say that it stands out). Recs should be solid.

ECs: intern for local record label, intern for local Weekly magazine, school newspaper staff, debate, propagandist for Young Democrats club, Events Coordinator for Latin Club, write for a couple online publications.

I show a strong interest in writing/English.

What do you think my chances are?

If you're taking all those AP classes, why's your GPA so low? You've got a good ACT score, too. It kind of looks like you're a bright kid that doesn't try very hard in school.

But being from Alabama might help since that's a random state. :P

You hit the nail on the head. I didn't do anything for my first 3 years of high school...trying to remedy that now, but sadly I don't think it will matter. Yeah I'm glad I'm applying from Alabama haha.

I hope I can get in because I'm slowly falling head over heels for this school. (Is it creepy to say that about a college?)

Anyone have any opinions?

My d is a third year at NCF, it has been a challenge but she mostly loves it. It is tough, rigorous academics - fast moving and requires discipline and self-motivation. Small classes, can't hide. They lose a fair amount of students to the party scene who then don't fulfill their contracts. I think that may be because some of the Florida students (not all by any means) are bright, counter culture kind of kids who have earned free tuition and think they can sail through college. That said, NCF seems to want kids who want them. I think you have a good chance - talk with the admission office, they love helping applicants. Good luck, I think the school is amazing. When you go to visit, go to the thesis room in the library and read some of the manuscripts. The work is impressive.

id say you're in but i dont know much about the school or its admissions so

Sounds great, momgeh.

Anyone else have any opinions?

Your uw GPA is a bit low, but I think they use the weighted one so you should be ok. If possible try to interview at the school.

My D (First Year) absolutely loves NCF and is putting forth lots of effort to do well in her classes. The school is very academically challenging, but also fun with many interesting things going on.

Hi 2forcollege, glad to hear from another NCF parent and that your daughter is loving it. I think it is an amazing school that is truly focused on high level learning. For Florida residents, it is an incredible bargain.

Man, this school sounds wonderful!

I got a catalog from NCF's Division of Humanities today, and after reading it I can now safely say that it's my #1 school. Absolutely incredible. If I don't get in I will be mortified. Ugh.

Does anyone know if one's essays, recs, course rigor, and test scores combined can outweigh his or her GPA in NCF's decision process? If so, I'll feel a lot better.

Hi momgeh50!

Yes, she is very happy there...it's really a perfect fit for her.

Good luck mtngoat1!

Thanks, I'll need all the luck I can muster...

does anyone know if you can still interview after you've submitted your application? is there a deadline for interviews? this isn't on their site.

I'm sure you can still interview after submitting your application. Just call the Admissions Office to set it up.

I have an interview for Friday--any suggestions, tips?

Just be yourself and let them know your interest in NCF. Have fun, things are very relaxed there.

Good luck!

thanks, I really appreciate all the help.

I forgot to add that you should call Admissions to arrange for you to sit in on 1 or 2 classes while you are there. That's what really helped my D decide this was the school for her.

How was your interview?
