Chances for a Mediocre International Student

OK, I'm looking at applying to ASU, U-Missouri (Columbia), U-Minnesota, and maybe UNC... what are my chances?

I am a non-US citizen attending a competitive international school outside of the states. As of now, my GPA is 3.5 and my SAT I score is 1760 (I am planning to re-take them, of course). I participate in JV x-country and track... I came third last year in the regional x-country finals. I am a member of the speech team, but I've never really won a competition... maybe I will this year. Oh yeah, I also participate in the IB program (Certificate, not Diploma).

What brings my GPA down is my poor math scores. I tend to do well in the humanities (I get straight A's in english, history, arts), and I'm planning to major in a communications-related field (probably journalism). What are my chances in being accepted to the schools above?

EDIT- which nation are you applying from? (things depend on this too...)

UNC will be tough. If you can really improve your SAT, look into Northwestern and UNC.

ASU, Minnesota and Missouri will be match/reaches with your 1760. I would add Boston University and Syracuse. Those two schools have solid programs in Journalism and they are not too selective.

Rexer, I'm in Japan. Does that really matter to colleges? Yeah, I'll have to raise my SAT scores... I'm just making a plan in case I don't raise my scores this October.

I knew it. Haha, I think I know which school you go to...

EDIT- nutshell, are you a boy or a girl?

I'm a guy, and I attend NIS (Nagoya International School). Are you familiar with NIS?

Oh, I was thinking more like ASIJ or something of that sort. Yes, I know your school, I've been there! You guys also have APs right, are taking any?

Whoa, I didn't expect anyone to know NIS. No APs for me.
