Chances for a procrastinating Asian female XD

I'm sorry my post came off as offensive. Looking at it, it does read offensively. Sorry about that.

Right before I wrote that post, I had read an article regarding the pressures that many asian emigrants put on their children in school. The pressure was to the point where kids got completely stressed out all the time, lost hair, and never really considered what THEY were passionate about.

It is often the case that those at the top (GPA) of their class in HS have worried about maintaining and perfecting every aspect of academia. The problem comes from the fact that once they choose a subject area to pursue, they are at best mediocre to people who have emphasized their specific subject area.

Again, sorry for the offensive post. You have to trust (someone who is a complete stranger) that what I want for you to get out of this is to realize that grades (and/or mastering everything) is not as important as finding where you are going to make your mark on this planet by doing something extraordinary.

Best Regards

In regards to different standards:
My argument is more about how humane it is to drill yourself into the ground. I have the same (high) standards for everyone who is a thinker.

It is not your social right to pursue your talents; it is your social responsibility.

Ummm, let's see, I would say that you personally decimated my scores, oh, about 300 pts. but hell that didn't stop me from getting into five of the schools on your list, so for you this should be a cake walk, plus w/ everything else you do, your chances are ridiculously spectacular, so umm, all there's to say is don't mess up, and the ground on which you walk on seems to be paved in gold ;)

Do your parents place value on your ultimately earning a PhD? If so, you could point them to this page: http://web.reed.edu/ir/phd.html

Reed is in the top ten of the country for future PhD production in these disciplines:

Anthropology, Area and Ethnic Studies, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, English Literature, Foreign Languages, History, Humanities, Linguistics, Math & Computer Sciences, Medical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Physics, Political Science, Sciences & Engineering, Social Sciences

That's 16 major fields. For the schools you originally listed, MIT is in the top ten of 5 of these fields, Princeton 5, Caltech 6, Harvard 0, Yale 4, Columbia 0, Stanford 1, Wash U 0, Johns Hopkins 0, Cornell 0, U of Rochester 0, Boston U 0.

Reed in not in the top ten of other disicplines.

This is a very narrow way of looking at the issue, but it might help your parents to consider Reed.

Stop stressing -- all you can do is your best and hope for a good outcome. Your stats will already get you something good.

-rocketDA I lose hair over school... (although it may be due to my cheap shampoo) Well, it might also be my lit class...

Hikaru, don't lose hair. It is not worth it. Relax a bit and enjoy life a bit. I'm sure colleges want to admit people who enjoy life.

Take care and sorry if i offended you.

rocketDA: no harm's been done, and I'm not offended at all :)

Everybody: thanks for all of your input; I suppose there's really nothing more to be done by now, so on to the college lottery I go.

lol. lottery? you have a pretty good chance

so u pass the stat test. I don't understand ur ECs. How is EIC a miscellaneous position? Also idk about ur school, but being an EIC junior year i think sort of tells me that ur school newspaper isn't really competitive. (prove me wrong of course if i am) Anyways what is ur focus? Focus on that and write an essay. Write it from ur heart. People can tell fakes just by reading it. It's simple it's generic, bland, not real. So whatever ur focus is, concentrate on that. Also try to see if u have something really distinguished about urself. I'm not saying accomplishments only; i'm talking about ideas too. Think about it. One of the reasons i got into columbia is because i expressed my desire to reunify korea which worked as a hook.(my alumni interviewer told me)

imiracle911: I put it under "misc but still important" b/c it doesn't fit under the main categories of music, science/math, and volunteering. Don't get me wrong - everything I listed under "misc" is still very important, and I dedicate huge chunks of my time for each and love every minute of it. I managed to become EIC b/c of past experience (such as being EIC of MS Literary Mag that received top national evaluations/awards, and same goes for the HS newspaper) and dedication to it since 9th grade. I definitely will pour my heart out on the essays (problem is, rejections hurts double if I do this) with a focus on philosophy because after 16 years of science, math, and the humanities, I realize that philosophy is the most fundamental of all.

best of luck pandora

Well, apply ED to NYU ;)
