Hello,

I'm a Korean female and I go to a public school in Delaware.

Unweighted GPA: 3.77; Weighted GPA: 3.86
Class Rank: top 10%
(For weighted GPA of 3.9+ I was in top 5% my soph. year but I slacked off so much in my junior year!)
About 5 (out of 400+ senior class) got into Ivies this year.

Ive taken AP US History, Calculus AB, and Statistics. Next year, I'll be taking AP econ, chem, Physics, and Calc BC
My school offers a little over 10 AP courses. For everything else, I've taken as many honors classes as possible. Ive been on the honor roll every single year but I dont think that will help too much.

Scores
770M 690CR 740W for a total of 2200
SAT II U.S. History: 730, Math 2: 710, Korean: 800 (so shocking I know)

My ec's are weak. I've been in Amnesty International (I'm the treasurer), Gay-Straight Alliance and an honor society for foreign languages since 10th grade
Outside of school, Ive been volunteering at Family Services since 10th grade and my supervisor was nice enough to nominate me for an award, which I got couple of months ago. I tutor once a week.

Brown is my first choice (early decision/super reach)
If that doesnt happen, which is likely, Ill be applying to Vassar, Haverford, Brandeis, and WashU
New College of Florida and Pittsburgh are my safeties

Can someone also suggest other colleges? Im trying to apply to 9. I prefer a school no bigger than 5000. It would be nice if the college isnt too "preppy" and has a flexible core curriculum or none at all. Thanks!

your uw gpa is pretty good, but your weighted gpa doesn’t seem that high.
I think you’ll get into at least one of your reaches
Can’t really think of any other suggestions.
Good luck!

You could look into Evergreen in Washington State as it doesn’t have a core curriculum.

Thank you!! Do I have any chances at Brown?

I think Brown is a reach for you, but you’ve got some chance of getting in, especially if you apply early. Your GPA is a little on the low side, and your EC’s are decent, but nothing special. I think your admittance at Brown will depend on how strong your essays/recommendations are. I think you’ll be pretty safely in at all your other schools, though.

Wow thanks. I was starting to lose my confidence seeing that all the other chances threads have overwhelming stats and a really long list of EC’s.

Yeah, I think you’re a fairly competitive applicant at Brown, especially if you keep your grades up and maybe consider retaking the SAT for a bit higher score. Even so, you should be fine. If Brown doesn’t work out, I’m almost certain you’ll be in at all your other schools.

Yea I was a bit disappointed at my reading score because I was only a couple questions away from getting a 700, but I’m really not sure if I can repeat my math score of 770. (last time I only got a 660 so I consider this one a big miracle!) Thanks for your encouraging words.

Hmm, I’m not sure if Brown superscores the SAT, but if they do, you should definitely retake it. If not, you’ll probably be alright with your score.

EDIT: I think Brown does superscore, in which case your math score will stand even if you do worse the second time around. You can only go up with a retake.

All I know is that you’re really smart! My opinion for a Korean is to go to any UC for great experiences!

Thanks Legend. =) Actually I considered the UC’s couple years ago, but I think my parents will freak out because the colleges are on the other side of the country.

Wow I really hope that they do superscore! Thanks for the advice.

bump.. I’m really sorry but I could use more input. Are there any colleges similar to Vassar?

Flare12345neo, I looked at other threads and it looks like my school doesn’t give a generous boost for honors and AP courses compared to other schools.

Wow, talk about improving your math portion sexycani, thats an amazing improvement. Maybe, it was just your asian skills kicking in. (I’m Korean too btw) Anyway, raising your SAT score, and GPA will the trick.

peace cani

LOL Thanks. Yea I was shocked at my own math score when I got it back couple of days ago.

bump bump one more time. I’ll also be taking AP US Government and the comparative gov’t test in May.
