ALSO DOES BEING IN THE IB HELP OR NOT
ALSO BROTHER DIED A YEAR AGO AND DAD LIVES IN ANOTHER STATE

come on guys bump bump bump

There are plenty of in-state URM applicants. OOS admission is extremely competitive. IB helps. Brother and Dad don't; lots of kids have similar situations. If you were in-state you'd be accepted. OOS, with your gpa/scores you have a chance but not a great one.

Well, "chances" questions are a bit pointless, since no one knows for sure unless he or she is on the admissions committee, and I'm not, but I completely disagree with dntw9up. I actually think your scores and ec's look very good. The fact that you're in a rigorous IB program in a top 10 high school helps with the 3.4 unweighted gpa. You don't look like a "slacker," either, based on what you've posted here. Also, if you look at the thread here on Instate vs OOS SAT scores, and check out the link that lists those from the Fall 2006 class, you'll see that there are plenty of OOS kids with SAT scores in the 1400s. You've done an awful lot of good volunteer work, too, and UNC seems to really like that. I assume you've applied already; if not, take your time with those essays, and be sure you get good recommendation letters, too. I actually think, especially as a URM, you have a very good chance of being accepted. But that's just my opinion only-- for what it's worth. Good luck!

I agree with janieblue - you should have a decent chance and don't look like a slacker at all. Good luck!

Aha, don't be so modest. Slacker? Please... I'd say you have a darn good chance.
