Chances for a slightly autistic Asian girl.

Hello, everyone.
I recently found out that I'm on the autism spectrum bordering Asperger's Syndrome. Because of this, I now have an IEP, even though I'm already a junior. My inability to socialize and strike up conversation has greatly impacted my school life.

First, there are barely any supportive peers in my grade who I am close friends with. Second, I have difficulty just approaching teachers or even saying hello. Thirdly, I cannot process the meaning of what someone else wrote very quickly - I have to read very slowly, causing me to not quite finish tests. As a result, my GPA has suffered some (3.4 uw, 3.8 w).

Because I am Asian, there is a sort of stigmatism about mental issues. Most of us (or at least our parents) do not think there truly are mental disorders and instead call it laziness. As a result of this plus some bullying in middle school, I was diagnosed with depression from so-called verbal abuse. However, I was not correctly diagnosed with an ASD until about a week ago.

*So here are the stats and colleges I'm interested in (if you can comment which schools have accomodations for IEPs that would be great):
Chance me maybe? *

Other
Diagnosed with both depression and autism spectrum disorder not otherwise specified.
Have a sister at Stanford, pay $30,000 yearly tuition
Also has a younger brother.
Parents want me to go for $10,000 a year.

Schools I am Considering:
University of Rochester
Tufts
Pitzer
Amherst
Johns Hopkins
Scripps
Bryn Mawr
Smith
Oberlin
Colorado College
University of Puget Sound
UAB
Uc Santa Cruz
Uc San Diego

I really like the first three...

I assume autism is not that big of a negative. I know how you feel…

U Rochester: Match
Tufts: Reach
Pitzer: Reach
Amherst: Reach
JHU: Reach
Scripps: Match
Bryn Mawr: Match
Smith: Match
Oberlin: High match
Colorado College: Match
U Puget Sound: Low match
U Alabama-Birmingham: Safety
U Alberta: Safety (2 ways to interpret UAB in my mind)
UCSC: Safety
UCSD: Match

Thanks!
I meant UAB to mean University of Alabama at Birmingham; didn’t realize there was another place shortened as UAB!

Then again, I don’t think there are that many Californian students who heard of U Alberta other than those who can’t be satisfied doing something other than petroleum engineering. Because, really, petroleum engineering is, hands down, the biggest draw for out-of-province students at U Alberta; I gave you chances for U Alberta assuming you didn’t want to do PetrolE.

If you want to do PetrolE, however, U Alberta is not a safety anymore.

Haha, I don’t think I’ve ever contemplated engineering (what my sister does) much less petroleum engineering. Nah, for me it’s all science and some artsy stuff.

Anybody else?

Wow, these things get old FAST!
Feel free to tell me if I’m being annoying (that’s kinda one of my issues)

Tufts: Low Reach
Amherst: Reach
Johns Hopkins: Reach
Uc Santa Cruz: Safety
Uc San Diego: High Match

Tufts is really a low reach? Or do they really care about the essays?

Ah well, perhaps I will find out more at my GC meeting next next week… But I wanted to see how my list was. :P

Would like to know about Tufts though…

Tufts is a reach because of your GPA.

Go with Catria said. He’s the best chancer on these boards.

Chance me?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1462104-chances-berkeley-northwestern-cornell.html

OK thanks for the clarification!

I’ll try to chance you… but I’m kind of not experienced with it… oh well.

bumping just cause I want some more opinions. Not discounting anyone here, just I’d like to see other peoples’ take.

Please? Can someone at least say they don’t know? That’s OK too…

Your GPA and SAT IIs are rather low. Also, I’m fairly certain NaNoWriMo doesn’t really count for a college EC. Amherst, Tufts, and JHU are reaches, with your current stats.

Oh, and off-topic, but my Asian parents also think that emotional or mental issues are actually just laziness/weakness, which sucked when I had depression. I’m kind of relieved you wrote this because I didn’t know many other Asian parents did this, lol.

I’ll try to chance you, though I’m really not familiar with most of your desired schools.

Tufts - Reach (maybe a low reach, I dunno)
Pitzer - Match
Amherst - Reach
Johns Hopkins - Reach
Scripps - Match
Bryn Mawr - Match
Uc Santa Cruz - Safety
Uc San Diego - Match

I think that admissions officers may be sympathetic if you explain your condition (perhaps you could write a college essay about it). Also, a 33 on the ACT in 8th grade is extremely impressive- I’m looking forward to seeing how you do once you retake it. If you can cinch a score of 35 or higher, it’ll definitely better your chances.

Thanks!
@renoverchat, haha yeah. I’m trying to improve them this semester with the added help due to my deficiencies. Well, as far as Asian cultures go in general, I think most don’t often share feelings and thus these issues go undiagnosed/unrecognized.

@ReallyFantastic, thanks. I really hope I can do better this year. I’m reading the LD forum for advice on the college essay stuff, too.

Schools I am Considering:
University of Rochester: match
Tufts: match
Pitzer: match

Johns Hopkins: high reach (although that’s what it is for everyone)
Scripps: match
Bryn Mawr: low reach
Smith: low match/match
Oberlin: low reach
Colorado College: match
University of Puget Sound: match
UAB: Birmingham? then match
Uc Santa Cruz: high match
Uc San Diego: low reach/match

Thanks!
I have updated SAT scores
