Hey guys. I come from a small town on the outskirts of San Diego, and would really love to be admitted to Stanford. I'm also applying to Dartmouth, Brown, UCLA, and UC Berkeley. I am a white male.

Academics:
-SAT Reasoning: 2220 (760 Math, 720 Writing, 740 Critical Reading)
-SAT II: 630 Chemistry, 680 Math II (really should've studied)
-ACT: 32
-APs: 5 (school offers 7)
-GPA Weighted: 4.37
-GPA Unweighted: 3.85
-Class Rank: 14 of 447 (was 5th, but you know how that goes)

Athletics:
-Varsity Athlete in Swimming and Diving for 3 years (pretty sure I'll make the team this next year)
-CIF Bronze medalist
-6 years swimming with Heartland Swim Association (4 years on senior team)
-Sectionals qualifier, and consolation finalist
-MVP and Most Improved for Heartland Swim Association

Leadership/Community Service/ Awards:
-300+ hours Student Athletic Trainer
-200+ hours AWANA Mentor
-120+ hours AVID Tutor
-Missions trips to Mexico
-Was nominated and selected as a California Boys State Delegate my first year at a new high school
-Art Competition and Fair Finalist
-Chemistry, Biology, and Leadership awards at my old high school
-Interned at SDSU in the Biochemistry Department, researching genetic expression within Northern-Atlantic bacteria (obscure I know)
-Performed research for an archeologist regarding beetle excrement using gas spechtrometry
-Worked at the Scripps Research Institute working on projects regarding Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
-Also, I'm a Lifeguard

I come from a large family (eight children), and I'm gay (if that matters). I have letters of rec. from my math teacher, chemistry teacher, my school's athletic trainer, and the head of chemistry at SDSU. Do I honestly have a chance?

Can you be recruited for diving anywhere? That would certainly help your chances! Also, was any of your research published? If it was that’s a BIG DEAL for Stanford. B/c without research or recruiting you look like a very weak candidate right now UCLA and UCB won’t be a problem. And if you get into UCLA you can always join their gay frat (one of the only ones in the country).

Chance Back!

I was recruited by University of Chicago, but eventually turned it down. Swimming in high school was 5 hours a day, and I decided not to continue it.

Yes, my research was published along with research from Yale and University of Edinburgh. Another intern also helped me with the research.

-Stanford is my number one, and Brown and Dartmouth pull second and third. My mother was a Dartmouth graduate (one of the first female students on campus).

Contrary to the above, I certainly don’t think you look like a weak candidate, especially given the fact that you’ve had your research published.

You’re a shoo-in to UCLA and UCB, and Brown and Dartmouth are certainly realistic. Stanford might be a low reach, but also definitely realistic. Good luck!

Don’t listen to the person who is saying that you are a wek candidate. That is abosolutely ludicrous. Stanford is a reach school for anyone and after a candidate reaches certain point of GPA, Test Scores, EC’s, and volunteer hours(which you certainly have - the only thing that you are a bit low on are your SAT II’s) then those candiates all stand the same chance at getting admitted, basically. Just hope the Adcom sees something in you or your essays. You are a strong candidate for Stanford and almost certainly will get admitted to Berkeley and UCLA.
Chance back?

I have two friends that had close to my same stats and they went to Stanford and Harvard. My school does not have a history of high achieving students, so it was a shock to me when they made it. However, I took a lot of hard classes (all the APs I’ve taken I’ve gotten 5s) and I got "c"s both semesters of Calc (that’s a high score for my teacher). Brown looks most realistic right now, but Stanord is my dream. Thanks for chancing me.
