My daughter is finishing up a very successful year at Bucknell. Her GPA will probably be about 3.8. She LOVES it but we are not sure we will be able to afford to continue the $50k+ cost of attending.

W&M was always her "dream" school but she was discouraged from applying by her college counselor because her SATs were very low (1250 math and verbarl) for an out-of-state applicant.

Now we are discussing the possibility of transferring to a school that is more affordable for us and even as out-of-staters, W&M is much more affordable than Bucknell.

Does anyone know what type of statistics it takes to get into W&M (Mason School of Business) as a transfer student?

I have a friend who transferred into WM and was accepted into the business school. If your D makes it clear to admissions she wants to major in business, from what my friend told me they are really helpful and will link her up with a B-School advisor who will help her get into classes. He had the pre-req’s for the B-School before coming to WM, so she might want to make sure she has a list of those for WM and takes the equivalents at Bucknell. With a 3.8, I would certainly expect her to be accepted. William & Mary’s new business school is really supposed to be state-of-the-art. I am not sure if it has opened yet, but i’m pretty positive it will at least be open by the time your D will be there.

According to that link it will open August 24th. Also, you can take a virtual tour of the building by going to the link.

Thanks so much for your advice and information. I will pass along to my daughter. She is just finishing up her 1st year at Bucknell with the requirements for their management program completed so hopefully she won’t be too behind.

You’re welcome, I found some more info on the website I directed you to that might be helpful:

Prerequisite Requirements for Majors Program

Our competitive admission is based upon cumulative GPA (grade point average), junior standing (obtained 54 credit hours) and the completion of five prerequisite courses. Prerequisites courses include:

Principles of Accounting (BUAD 203)
Introductory Microeconomics (ECON 101 or ECON 151)
Introductory Macroeconomics (ECON 102 or ECON 152)
Introductory Calculus (MATH 108, MATH 111, MATH 112, MATH 131, or MATH 132)
Introductory Statistics (BUAD 231, MATH 106, ECON 307, PSYC 301, SOCL 353, MATH 351, or KINE 394)

Transfer Students should apply to the Mason School of Business after being admitted to the College of William & Mary. Students who have completed all prerequisite courses and obtained junior standing (as determined by the Office of the University Registrar) will be eligible to apply for competitive admission to the Mason School of Business. Students who have completed the prerequisites courses and have obtained junior standing are not guaranteed admission to the Undergraduate Business Program.

Any questions concerning transfer students should be directed to:
Jennifer Dahnke, Assistant Director of the Undergraduate Business Program, Tyler Hall Room 240, (757) 221-2719, jennifer.dahnke@mason.wm.edu

Transfer Credit
Due to the overwhelming demand of students seeking admission to the The College of William & Mary, the evaluation of transfer credits by the Office of the University Registrar takes place only after a student has accepted their offer of admission to the College. Students who have an interest in pursing business as a major or minor should contact Jennifer Dahnke.

Thanks so much!!! If your willingness to help is any indication of the W&M community, I am sure my daughter will have a great experience if she decides to apply and is accepted as a transfer.

Kelly57:

My son is OOS at William & Mary and my daughter will be starting at Bucknell next year. There is a cost differential, but not as much as you would think - T&F+R&B for OOS at W&M will be a hair under $40K next year and about $52K at Bucknell. We had pretty much written Bucknell off as too expensive, until my D got a merit scholarship that pretty much evens out its cost to the same as we will be paying for son at W&M.

My wife and I are W&M grads, so we love the school. My D is not going there because it has no engineering. If W&M had engineering, it probably would have been her choice as well. However, she really liked what she saw at Bucknell and is very happy to be going there (although we’ve told her she needs to find some more scholarships to help with the big price tag).

My wife was an OOS female transfer in to W&M (after two rejections and a waitlisting) and my two closest friends were transfers in as well. It sounds as though she has a good chance, although OOS female is the toughest for getting in.

What are the possibilities that her success at Bucknell might open some scholarship opportunities, both institutional and outside? At this point, the savings, assuming full price at each would be about $36,000 over her remaining three years, less if she has to go an extra semester, and you’re in the hole if she has to go another full year. And, frankly, the chance for any merit aid for an OOS transfer at W&M is about the same as winning the lottery without buying a ticket (for anyone else it is about the same as winning the lottery with buying a ticket - still virtually 0%).

Considering that she likes Bucknell, it is a good school, and she’s already 25% of the way through, the cost savings may not be as much as you had hoped (and could even end up costing more in the long run), and the trauma of transferring and reacclimating to another school, I’m not so sure transferring to anything but a significantly less-expensive (i.e., in-state public) would really be worth it. It sounds as though she has not already applied to W&M, so it would not be for next fall - Spring 2010 would be her first opportunity. Would she stay at Bucknell for Fall 2009? Sit out a semester? Get some community college courses?

Whatever you and she decides, good luck! Hope we can help you with this dilemma.

K9 – Thanks for your thoughts and I hope your daughter loves Bucknell. I am actually a Bucknell legacy which makes this dilemma all the more difficult. I originally thought the difference wasn’t great enough to warrant a transfer but my daughter was the one who wants to look further in to the transfer if we are unable to get any type of assistance from Bucknell. We have applied for FA but our EFC is just above Bucknell’s tuition so our only hope is for some type of scholarship. I think she is concerned about the financial impact her tuition is having on us and the fact that I have younger daughter who has her heart set on Bucknell. When we made the decision to send my oldest daughter to Bucknell, we had the savings to pay for both of our daughters to attend the schools of their choice but we lost more than ½ of our savings in the stock market crash so we are really feeling stressed over how we are going to manage. The ideal thing would be if Bucknell came through for us… my daughter is an awesome student, an athlete and actively involved in several campus organizations. Education is our top priority… we have happily sacrificed to pay private middle and high school tuition for our daughters while saving for college and we did have every intention on paying their college tuitions with no assistance.

Kelly57:

I hope that Bucknell is able to help you - it really would be in the best interest of both Bucknell and your daughter for her to be able to stay at and graduate from Bucknell. Every time we have talked with Bucknell’s FA people (and with the Dean and Assoc. Dean of the School of Engineering) they have stressed keeping in touch with them and letting them know of any problems and that they will do everything possible to make it possible to stay at Bucknell. Let’s see how true that is . . .

Good luck and keep us apprised. I signed that deposit check to Bucknell with the thought of something like your situation nagging at me.

K9 -

Thanks for your support. My daughter plans on talking to someone in the Financial Aid office before she finishes up the semester. My concern is that they will suggest student loans… and frankly after losing so much of our college savings in the stock market crash, that would be adding insult to injury.

I’ll keep you posted.

to kelly57,

I am a Bucknell grad whose S will be going to Bucknell this fall. His heart was set originally on W&M and we were disappointed when he was rejected. We hale from N. Va. and his experience was typical of the experience of so many top students here in Fairfax County.

We were pleased with the financial aid offer from Bucknell which in our case brings our cost down to virtually what it would cost to keep our son in an IS public university.

You probably know that Bucknell, like many, gives weight to the expected family contribution and improved their financial aid offer to us upon a showing that there was a gap between our abilities to pay combined with finaid set off against the costs. If you haven’t approached Bucknell finaid with your situation, you probably should.
