ec's are what she is lacking in...

and CS
low income family, and will be first in family to go to college.
Thank you all in advance!!!

the grades and scores are great, but ECs are weak. VERY WEAK considering the applicant pool. YOu see I'm a black male and I am just the opposite. I have incredible ECs (helping the AIDS situation in Johannesburg, South Africa, etc.) but so so scores (32 on ACTs). The thing is, ur daughter will look good because she is a URM, but compared to everyone she does not stand out that much.

yale- reach
jhu-match
cornell-match

Thank you very much Devil. However, the stats I posted are of a friend not my child. I am a high school student too. lol.

I too think her EC's are very weak. But for a good reason. I have know this girl through out all of high school and since 9th grade I have been trying to persuade her to get more involved, so she can get into top schools. However, she doesn't have much support for home so she doesn't really have any means to do anything. Plus her parents wont really finance anything she wants to do, nor will they let her get a job. I have no idea why they do this. Also her parents don't even think she should go to college, they think it is a waist of time and money. I think she has finally decided that she should go to college, and with scores like hers she definiently should. Sorry for all the rambling. It just make me upset that her parents won't really let her do anything, and in a since have greatly hurt her chances at colleges. But thank you again Devil.

she should probably make that clear in her essays, a counselor rec. or in an additional part of the application if she wants to better her chances of getting in, which I think are good, regardless of her lack of EC's

jordana did you list your GPA (Its the most important factor in Admission)

jordana, ur friend has great chances, i think. Her essays should be great given her personal circumstances. However, great ECs are a norm to ivies. Like, if u have excellent ECs and okay grades, u have a wonderful shot. However, if u have wonderful grades and so so ECs, i think they will see u as a normal braniac. The major peice of advise I could give is to SHOW THAT U CAN BENEFIT THE SCHOOL. Adcoms would rather admit a 3.2 who loves the school than a 4.97768686 who likes it for the name.

one more thing; BLACK POWER!

Thank you all for your replies. They were all very helpful. By the way her GPA is a 3.95 uw. I am not sure what it would be weighted though.

Low income. First generation college. Excellent grades. Scores in the top 1% of black students: She has a shot at any university in the country except perhaps for CalTech, which is very numbers driven. Her ECs are fine because she's first gen college and low income and would be compared to people from her background. What she has accomplished is quite remarkable considering the challenges she has faced.

I hope she has applied to Harvard and Princeton, which have some excellent financial aid packages for low income students and also are attempting to attract more low income students.

one other thing: white power! see, now im racist!

^who is this guy?

lol. a wierdo

lol..I think he was just trying to make a point, I don't think he's racist.

I know nothing about the college admissions process, but your friends stats look great. Does she have a particular interest in a major right now?

yes, i was making the point that anyone can say "black power" and it would be ok, but god forbids anyone saying "white power," that's racist

^^Umm I understood that and I was taking up for you, even though I'm black....

But coming from a Black perspective, I don't think Devil May Cry meant "Black Power" in a "Malcolm X point-of-view" more of an "encouraging black education "point-of-view" does that make sense?

yes. and i mean white power in more of an "encouraging white education point-of-view." perfect sense to me :)

Lol!

Go Jordana's Friend!
