I am very new to this forum (first post!), so I hope this is OK to start another "chances" thread, but would anyone be willing to help predict my chances of admission to UCLA or UCB? I am getting so so nervous! After working at this for years, it is crazy to know that I will find out so soon.

Major: Psychology (impacted, I know...this makes me nervous)
GPA: 3.81
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Yes
TAP: Berkeley, but not UCLA
Pre-requisites: Did all of the Psych pre-reqs (both for UCLA and UCB) that were available at my CCC. Also I will gradaute from my CC with an Associates in Psych. Will this help to show that I am dedicated to the subject?

Essays: TAP adviser told me my essays were some of the strongest they had ever seen
Honors: Dean's List, PTK

Extracirriculars: Officer of CC organization, some tutoring hours, some volunteer hours, but mostly lots of work experience (I'm an older student, had to work to support myself for many years). I am a bit worried about EC's...I had to work so much that I didn't have much time outside of school.

Other: First-generation college student, low low income

Thanks so so much to anyone who is willing to give some input!

Yikes, OK. Thank you! I guess this means there is a real chance I will not get in to either school.

Does anyone have a sense of how helpful UC Berkeley TAP is? They were very helpful in advising me, but I wonder if it actually makes it easier to get in? I saw the high admission rate (over 80%) listed on the TAP website, but this can’t seem true, especially for an impacted major like Psychology.

My GPA is right at the “average” for UCLA Psych transfer admits…I wish I had done a little better in school (but don’t we all). :-|

You have a great chance of getting in still. I’m at the same chances and I know both of us tried our best. There’s a bunch of uncertainty, and after all… 20k transfer applicants for UCLA this year. :(

Just to touch on some of the things you were wondering about, an associates degree has no impact on your admission decision and neither with being apart of the TAP for Berkeley. TAP to UCLA does have an advantage because it’s an actual certification that you get for completing an honors curriculum that shows you completed coursework above and beyond the normal CC coursework. In addition, it improves your chances by allowing you to be considered for a second major. TAP at Berkeley is just an advising program. There’s no certification, no extra curriculum. So it doesn’t really make you any stronger as an applicant, although obviously it can help you in the application process. In the review process it won’t have any impact.

If you’re right around the average and you have strong essays, I’d say your chances are pretty good. Remember it’s just an average. There will be people quite a bit lower than the average GPA as well as higher that will be admitted. So if you’re sitting around the average and everything else in your application is pretty strong I’d say your chances are pretty high. That being said though, I think the only thing that can hurt you is missing prereqs. Psych really doesn’t have many prereqs for UCLA and with it being as competitive as it is, the likelihood is that the majority of applicants are going to have most, if not all, of their prereqs finished. If you’re only missing one prereq that’s probably okay. However, I’d have to imagine 2 or more out of 5 could hurt you quite a bit.

Thanks so much for weighing in. I just re-checked the prereqs, and I have actually completed all of them for both schools, so I should be good there.

Thanks, too, for explaining the difference between Berkeley TAP and UCLA TAP. I had wondered about that.

If Berkeley TAP is just an advising program, how can they brag about such very high admission numbers? Just curious. I thought they did something to “flag” the application as coming from TAP (which is why the adviser helps you submit it or something).

Again, thanks to you both. It is really helpful to hear other people’s opinions, because I really don’t know what to expect.
