Chances for Admission

We're out of state. My daughter and I visited Univ of MD in the spring and she really liked it. Her GPA is 4.3 weighted. SAT scores: verbal 620, math 660, writing (although nobody cares) 650. She has been in honors English and foreign language since freshman year. This year she'll take an AP class and a 4th year of math. She plays one sport and is involved with 1 additional activity but no volunteer work. What do you think about her chances?

Sounds like the average CP student to me. I think it's a match, although she may not be directly admitted to some of the more selective programs at Maryland, like the business school (but I'm not really familiar with how tough it is to get into these colleges as a freshman). How many times has she taken the SAT? If only once or twice, she might want to go for another round in the Fall b/c Maryland "superscores" i.e. takes highest scores from each sitting.

she will get in. higher SAT scores can get her $$$

Is health science (She wants to be a physical therapist.) considered selective? Would her chances be better declaring her major or applying undeclared? Does it matter?

declaring a major / not doesn't affect your chance of admission
however, it does IF you transfer from a community college

Anyone who already goes to MD--I know GPA and SATs are critical but how much weight is placed on the application essay?

I don't think anyone on these forums can say for sure. Maryland's application was more writing-intensive than most, but only the addmissions committee knows how closely they read them ;].

I just got back from an info session at UMD, and they actually stressed the essay quite a bit. Also, I think your daughter may want to do a few more ECs, because she is OOS. If they only admit around 30% OOS, it will be more competitive than in-state. Overall, I think with her SAT and GPA she is a match, but she might want to pick up some volunteer work or somehting just in case. Oh yeah, make sure she applies by December 1. They accept 90% of their class from that deadline.

I'm a current student at Maryland. I know that to get into certain schools you need to have at least a 1300 and 3.2 uw gpa, so the GPA is not hard, but the SATs is not attainable for everyone such as myself.

I was admitted for Fall 2007 Term. My statistics were 4.07 W GPA and a 1910 SAT( 1220 R+M). Decent extracurriculars, stellar essays, and tremendous special circumstance which helped me with the brownie points I lacked in my SAT score. I know people with much higher SAT scores and GPAs who only got admitted for Spring 2008. OOS at Maryland is getting very tough these days, though I still feel that tri-state students get a little more consideration when compared to other applicants. I know many students from NY/NJ who had much lower GPAs and a bit higher SATs, and got admitted. I'd say the average GPA and SAT is a 3.8-3.9W and 1280-1350 SATs.

To get into Smith Business School as a freshman you need a 1300 SAT and 3.2 UW GPA and other factors weigh in, competition is very fierce for these limited spots.

Hope this helps!

BTW, I'm an OOS student.

EDIT: Forgot to add, that I only took two Advance Placement courses. But the rest were honors.
