Chances for African American Female

I'm starting the application process and I'm very confused right now. My guidance councelor is recommending some schools for me but I think that some of them are way out of my league. One school that I really like is Duke, and I'd love to know what my chances are for getting in. I have an ok GPA and SATs, but the few Honors and EC's that I have dont make me stand out from the crowd. I was wondering if anyone could suggest some schools that would be good for me. My school has to be on the east coast and I'm thinking about majoring in Economics. I don't want a school in the middle of nowhere and it has to be diverse. Something to note is that I will be a 1st generation college student and live in Paterson (go to school in different city).

Which schools did your counselor recommend?
Are you playing any sports senior year?

He recommended a couple Ivy's. I can't play any sports senior year because my job is consuming all of my time.

suggestions anyone?

In terms of Ivies, I'd suggest Brown.

If you could goto a non - east coast id suggest Uof Chicago... thats a good econ place and it isnt the boondocks...

Rice has a good econ department... but is that your idea of East coast?

your stats aren't bad, perhaps a bit low for Duke... why not try anyway?
other factors will have to be highlighted so they are taken into consideration, but that's what essays and recs are for, right?

Other picks
~urban schools, east coast, econ, and fit your stats~

Columbia
Georgetown
Boston university

SUNY(s)
Howard
UConn
George Washington U

fortunately, almost every school offers an econ major so you have many options. if you're gonna pay for a private school, I'd suggest looking at schools outside the east as well. I have a friend who loves the econ dept. at UC San Diego, says the classes are good and teachers are really teaching... go figure, lol. just saying, don't limit yourself, take a look at a college catalog and the list of best schools for your major and do a weekend of research to really find a short list of possible schools.

It's not that I'm limmiting myself to the east coast. I'd love to go out to different states and see new things. It's just that my mother doesn't want me to go anywhere far. I had a hard time getting her to accept the idea of me bein in NC. She's so set on having me near that if I was accepted to Stanford, she'd rather have me go to the local community college. So, I'm stuck in the east.
