My school doesn't offer APs, though I am self-studying
English and Literature and plan to take it the next time
the test is offered. I had a hard time in Algebra 2, and
ended up having to retake it in the summer (and all that
that implies). My cumulative average is an 89, and I am
taking the hardest courseload available at my school. I
am also taking classes at the community college this
summer and all day except for two or three periods next
year (I have either fulfilled requirements or am taking
comparable courses at the cc)

mmm out of state or in-state? that's important... 89 average isn't that great but you are at a school that doesn't offer too much

out-of-state

oh yeah... long shot, but you can do it

Being very honest, as an out of state female the cards are stacked against you unless you can get the math portion of the SAT up. Please understand that the "average" for OOS students is already a higher SAT and GPA than the "average" in state score which in essence means that they can be and are more selective in who they admit. Add to that the the school population breaks down 60/40 female to male and that the number of female applications follows that percentage if not exceeds it and the selection process for women becomes even more difficult.

GPA is a bit on the low side but not out of the running but combined with class rank and low SAT, it paints a different picture than if you were top 10 percent and had a higher GPA to go with the lower test scores. Even that would not be a guarantee. Here's how I know:

My OOS D had over 2100, a 3.89 GPA (her school doesn't rank) in a very rigorous program at a top private school, great recs and essays plus she has a brother who will be a junior at UNC and she was not admitted this past year.

Work on the SATs and make sure your essays are top notch. I would also ask your college counselor their thoughts about just using the ACT score as well. Good luck.

UNC has posted next Falls essays questions on their admissions web page too. Always good to get a head start thinking about essay content. BTW: Instate admission this year was no piece of cake either. My bestfriend has a 4.2 WGPA, M/V SATs of 1410, and 2 older brothers who graduated from UNC and didn't get in. I imagine admission for OOS was brutal.

Yeah... admissions this year was supposedly much more competitive. I think the average SAT score was over 1300 (I think that was for in-state).
