<p>Now for a serious answer. Bring up the SAT1 to closer to 2000, write incredible essays and hopefully you have some stellar ec's dude. If you do that you still have a solid chance in the mid-tier UC's.</p>
<p>i agree with mrxalleycat. i don't know anyone who applied to merced that got rejected [unless they did not complete the application, of course].</p>
<p>if your friend is worried, he should go see the average SAT scores and GPA at the UCs. the 20% range is called a reach and the 75% range is a match [ that is what i remembered; correct me if i am wrong] there's other factors to be considered, but i agree that GPA & SAT scores are important [why else would we have them, right?]</p>
<p>as for ECs and personal statements, he should go ask friends from other UC schools to lend him their personal statements for reference [ NOT to copy ]. that way, he can get an idea about what it takes to get into a certain UC. tell him not to lose faith in applying to the upper-tier schools either. the average scores are still only averages, meaning there are people with higher stats, but also there are those with lower stats, too.</p>
