Chances for an Average Student (If anyone has time)

Because I feel embarrassed to be amidst some incredibly bright people, I'll try to make this quick and to the point. For anyone who has time to evaluate an average student, I'd like to know what my chances are for getting into my reach and dream schools, Northeastern University and New York University)

Academics - 3.6 GPA (Weighted), predicted 3.3 - 3.4 for unweigted
- Within top 15 percent of my class
- Honors Courses throughout 9-10 grade (My school does not allow you to take AP classes until Junior year)
- Junior Year, took AP U.S. History and Government (5's on both)
- Senior Year, AP Psychology, Biology, Calculus, and Literature (expect 4-5 on all of them except Calculus)
- Multiple Honor Roll and Achievement Awards
- 1960 SAT, 1990 Superscore

Extracurricular - Captain of the Cross Country and Track team for two years. (Made first team all county, have good enough times to be competitive with both teams)
- Student Government Class President
- Creator and leader of our school's Humanitarian Society (aims to teach students about inequality and injustice in our society and provoke action against it)
- Quiz Bowl Team Captain
- Part of the Heroes and Cool Kids organization (brings high school students to elementary and middle schools to educate them about sportsmanship, bullying, and drugs)
- Intern at an up and rising SAT/Tutoring Institution (Prixcel Prep) for dramatic increase in SAT score

Personal Information - Being an ethnic minority (hispanic) to an incredibly low income family (single mom, under 20k, currently unemployed), I haven't had the time to partake in many more EC's due to my commitment to my listed activities and part-time minimum wage job I've had to take to help pay for rent and other expenses. (24 hours a week for the last 3 years, am currently Assistant Manager.) I know I'm far from the best out there and am quite realistic about my expectations. I understand that many other people have had greater obstacles and have still managed to produce outstanding effort. Both these schools interest me for their extensive research and strong science departments. As a hopeful Biology/Psychology major, what chance do I have against such schools?

Better chance at NE than NYU (esp. if you applied EA to NE). Good chance at either one. If I had to give percentages, NYU = 45%, NE = 65%. Beware of NYU- their aid sucks, and given your situation, I don’t think you can swat 60,000 per year easily.

Thank you very much! Those odds are about what I expected. NYU is the tougher out of the two, but I do have a great relation with the assistant Cross Country, to the point where he calls me and is actively helping me on what to do to get in. I’m hoping that because of my hindered positions, I’ll get financial aide to make it at least somewhat more reasonable. However Northeastern is by far more generous and will most likely choose it in the hopeful chance I get into both. Again, thanks for the comment!

Ok… i would say NYU is probably your best bet here. Northwestern would need better GPAs to be frank. Your ECs are pretty good but the basis of any application (esp for top 20 colleges) is a strong transcript. You have a chance but its rather slim i would say. Same thing with SAT. try to break 2050 mark because it would help u out immensely. i say try ACT because i bet u would kill it.
chance me please?? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1424564-please-chance-top-colleges-really-need-advice.html

I think you’ve got a great shot at both; you have solid ecs, decent sats and multiple hooks. The only thing that may be sub par is your gpa. Good luck! =)

You are not an average student, you are a great student. Try to apply to more schools that you like with a few safeties and see what happens :)

Thank you everybody! To the person who thought I was applying to Northwestern, thank you but I know that that’s far beyond my reach. I’m also aware how sub-par my GPA is. Despite the fact I’m in all the classes with the top students and generally perform to their level and often above them, it’s my organization and laziness that’s dragged me down over the years. Although this senior year I’m doing all my work and keeping high marks, I really regret my foolish mistakes throughout high school. It’s really sad when you have an A+ in AP Psychology but managed to get a C in journalism because of homework. The chances are very heart warming, keep 'em coming!

Awesome job with the leadership positions, those will definitely help.

May I ask what are my chances for some other schools? My choices are as follows:
Fordham University
University of Connecticut
SUNY Stony Brook
SUNY Binghamton
Rutgers University
Syracuse University
The College of New Jersey (major school I really want to get in)
Montclair and Ramapo (although these are more for financial/safety reasons)

After calculating my GPA, I’d say unweighted is definitely a 3.3. I also forgot to include that I’m a volunteer middle school assistant cross country coach. Any (preferably honest) replies are welcome.

You stand a good chance at any of these schools, NYU is a little competitive but you still stand a good shot.

I think you could definetely get in both places. Maybe retake the SATs again? Not because what you got is bad, but you don’t have a 4.0 so a super high SAT score might push you over the edge. You EC’s are good though.

I’m an average student too! Do you mind chancing me? It’s just one school so it shouldn’t take too long. I’m really nervous and want a lot of opinions, I’m sure you know how that feels ahaha
