Chances for an International Student? (please?)

Hello guys, I'm a Spanish student that currently attends a private boarding school in the UK. I'm applying to: UCLA/UCB, Stanford, Yale, Columbia, NYU, UChicago, UPenn. (Prospect Economics Major)

I fluently speak English, Spanish, Italian, took two years of German courses (A2 Level) and I'm currently doing Mandarin Ab Initio

SUBJECTS:
I'm taking the IB diploma with:
Maths HL
Spanish HL A
Economics HL
English B SL
Biology SL
Mandarin Ab Initio

I have 7 predicted in all the subjects, with an overall prediction of 45 points.

SATS:
I took the SATs 3 times, with my highest score being 2050 and the others 1970 and 1990.
I took the SAT subject tests but they weren't so good so I'm planning to re-take them and get 730+.(Maths IIC and Biology, got already 770 in Maths IC).

GPA:
I don't know what my GPA is but I got high-ish grades throughout all high school (in Spain and in England).

CLASS RANK:
With 45 predicted, I'm the first in a class of 45 students.

Toefl IBT:
109/120(minimum required by all the colleges is 100).

EXTRACURRICULARS:

SPORTS:

-Swimming for 7 years
-Tennis for 3 years
-Golf for 1 year
(never took part in any competitions except from swimming when I was smaller)

WORK EXPERIENCE:

-Job Shadowing the CEO of a factory for one week.

ECONOMICS RELATED EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES (100% applying for economics major)

Team member in Target 2.0 competition (a competition organized by the Bank of England, only the 4 best students from each school get selected for the team)

Member in Young Enterprise(students create a business and try to sell stuff)

-Founder of the Economics Society of my School

SERVICE:

-42 Hours in the Spanish Red Cross

-150+ hours helping the elders with a charitable organization

-Serving in a Soup Kitchen for 30+ Hours

-Organizing the Christmas Meal on December 25th (twice) for the poor and the Homeless in my city in Spain

-Helping students in my boarding house with spanish/maths (15+ Hours)

-Teaching Tennis to children in my school (don't know, like 40 hours)

-Elected as an House prefect in my house

-Completed the course to be a peer mentor in my school

OTHER EXTRA CURRICULAR:

-When I was in school in Spain I was selected by my school to take part in a 160 Hours Physics/Maths course in Malta.

-Model United Nation 2013 in Spain

-Played bass guitar for 4 years (no grades taken)

-Played Violin for two years (no grades taken)

I don't know if this matters but as I applied to very competitive UK universities (Oxbridge, LSE..) I read a number of really challenging economics books (Like The General Theory, Road to Serfdom...), went to many lectures and courses related to economics.

Also I have no need for financial aid ( I think this could help a little as Columbia, Stanford, UPenn, Chicago etc. are NEED AWARE for International Students)

So can you please chance me for these colleges? :)

bump i’m worried

I got worried too, well I think you have a really good chance because your ECs are really… REALLY good, and you speak many languages which is another great bonus. The only thing that might be a little bit low is your SAT scores, but I really think that your strengths really compensate for that weakness

bump

How much can you pay per year?

OH MY GOSH YOU HAVE PREDICTED 45 WITH A 7 IN MATH HL? WHAT ARE YOU? I’M MANAGING A 5 :open_mouth:
haha, otherwise, I think your PGs are stellar and so are your ECs. Your SAT score’s a bit on the lower end but with predicted 45, your ECs and decent essay and recs, you stand a very good chance with UCLA/UCB and NYU. However, you can never know with the ivies (your SAT score is quite low for some of them- think about retaking it in Jan). With your other scores though, you definitely have a shot. Good luck! Chance back? :slight_smile: <a href=“Chance me for Vassar I'll chance back :) - Vassar College - College Confidential Forums”>Chance me for Vassar I'll chance back :) - Vassar College - College Confidential Forums;

I agree with @12345n‌. I know nothing about IB GPAs, but what you wrote sounded great. Your SAT score is low for all of the schools on your list with the exception of NYU. Being full pay international may bump you up, but I would advise adding a few more match schools to this list. Good luck!

answering to @paul2752 , luckily enough, full fees.

UCLA: high match
NYU: match
All the others: reach due to your SAT and their competitiveness.

Excellent objective and subjective statistics, but your SAT I score is low. Plus, you are an international applicant without a US citizenship, which puts you in the international applicant pool. Said pool consists of students with 2400 SAT I scores and perfect TOEFL scores (and I am not even considering their subjective stats). Hence, here is my ostensible verdict:
UCLA/UCB- low reach
Stanford- far reach
Yale-far reach (go for Harvard…)
Columbia- reach
NYU- fit
UChicago- low reach
UPenn- reach
Once again, this is all from my ‘humble’ opinion. I may be wrong. Best of luck.

Thanks to everyone who gave their opinion, I hope more will be coming :)

A domestic student would be hard pressed getting into these schools with your SAT scores, so I could only imagine how hard it would be for an international student. You will be full pay, which is an egg in your basket, but aside from that, you have to make sure your essay is memorable because your ECs don’t really stand out. I read them twice before starting to write this post and I only faintly remember something involving the elderly.

Thanks for all the replies, keep them coming! <3

Just wondering what your SAT breakdown is? I’m assuming W and CR bring you down?

My sat is like CR 730 M 790 W 630

you mean 630 CR no ? otherwise it’s 2150 as opposed to the 2050 you stated.

Sorry, I meant 690 on Maths (sadly)

yes, 690 is not great, but your other stats are good.

good for what unis? :(

Almost no chance of UPENN they require all your SAT scores. Your SAT scores are lower than the bottom 25% accepted.
