Chances for an international student

Hi everyone,
i am from India and applying for admissions fall 2015. Can you calculate my chances at the ivy league?

Intended major - Mechanical Engineering
SAT -2200
SAT 2 - Physics -770
Chemistry - 750
TOEFL - 115/120

Subjects taken -
Physics
Chemistry
Maths
English
Physical education

10th grade CGPA - 10.0/10.0
11th grade marks - 93.8%

ECs:-
Karate for seven years, participated at national level
Founder of Quiz club at school, won quizzes at state and national level
Volunteered for over 500 hours over 4 years on anti-tobacco campaigns, AIDS awareness and sanitation awareness.
MUNs, head delegate of school delegation to Harvard MUN 2014
Debates, Olympiads at state level
Theatre till 10th grade
Studied Sanskrit (an Indian language on the verge of extinction) for 4 years
Event manager for school

LORs
Three from my Physics, Math and English teacher, probably good
One from my best friend

Essays: Good (that's what my english teacher says)

Financial Aid: Not applying for financial aid

Your chances a like any other competitive student like you. We don’t know, you have a good profile, you have chances of acceptance.

What Ivies are you applying for? Since you are a non-aid-seeking int’l, your chances are much higher than those who are seeking aid. If you are aiming for the top Ivies(say HYP+Colubmia, Penn), your SAT is okay(but still kind of low, esp for HYP). Also, remember to shine with your essays. There are always cases where academically high-acheiving guys are turned down by elite schools not because of the lack of personal quality, but because they seem way too generic amidst a pile of walking-2400+4.0s.

Best of luck.

@rohit7198 - your qualifications appear to be fine, but there is nothing you’ve listed that clearly distinguishes you from other qualified international applicants - the likelihood of success of your application probably rides on your essays, recommendations, interviews (if you have any) and a whole lot of luck. Your odds are likely to much better at Cornell than at HYP. Which Ivies are you applying to?

If you want to study in the US and don’t need financial aid, you should be applying to a large range of colleges, not just Ivies. The majority of colleges in the US will likely accept you without hesitation, but if you’re just applying to the Ivies and peers such as Stanford and MIT, there’s a good chance you will not get accepted to any of them.

Good luck!

@bbff1234‌ I am aiming for Dartmouth, Cornell, Brown and UPenn. What are my possible chances there? Moreover I retook the SAT and am expecting a 2200+ this time.

@BldrDad‌ I am aiming for Dartmouth, Cornell, Brown and UPenn. The recommendations that I have got are excellent.

Well, given your aims, I would say:

Dart: reach( for int’ls it’s totally unpredictable; I know I bunch of 2400+hard-core-STEMs who get rejected right away, and 2200+art-oriented who are admitted. Moreover, I don’t think Dart is that great if you are aiming for Mech Engi)
Cornell: high match-low reach(your profile does resemble the profiles in Cornell admit pool I should say)
Brown: reach(same reasons with Dart)
Penn: low-reach - reach( should be reachable unless you are applying for Wharton)

@bbff1234‌ applying for Penn engineering and not Wharton

@bbff1234‌ What about Johns Hopkins?

Penn engi is still a low reach-reach(it’s Penn, after all). As for JHU, I would say it’s a high match to low reach

Hey! I’m Salem from Ghana and I’m applying to Grinnell and Lafayette with an SAT score of 1970(which I would probably better) and a pretty unique CV (at least, that’s what I’ve been told…). Well, I’m just kinda going crazy on whether or not I have a good chance of obtaining admission and if there are any other great colleges I should apply to…? please help!

@rohit7198
I would say you try out Georgia Tech and UIUC, both have excellent Mech eng programs and UC Berkeley is also an excellent choice considering your 10th CBSE marks. These are top and competitive schools for Mech eng. Berkeley might still be a reach for you and me as we are both international
Please chance me I am applying to as many as possible

I am from India AP is not offered in my school I just took the exams by reading books without the help of any teacher.

Chance me for Jerome Fisher, I know chances for such a program is really unpredictable but any comments are appreciated. I have also listed CS as an alternate choice chance me for that to.
Other colleges-
UCLA, UCB, Georgia Tech, UIUC, Harvey Mudd, NYU, Cornell, Princeton, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, University of Washington Seattle, MIT.

@Bored1997‌ I have already applied for UCLA and UCB. I really can’t say anything about the ivies though. One of my
classmate got into Carnegie Mellon with 1860 on SAT Early decision and one of my senior made it to Princeton with a 2010 on SAT regular decision.
It also depends on your ability to pay. Are you applying for financial aid? And I think it is weird that you got a 760 on Math1 and a 800 on Math2. It comes down to your ability to pay.

@rohit7198 no not applying for any financial aid.
Just yesterday I was really demoralized by the fact that a guy with 2370 and a solid ec record was turned down by upenn but then I guess he did not have much else going on. I guess sometimes it also depends on what you are doing resonates with your major or not.

@rohit7198 what was the major of the guy who got into CMU I applied CS I have like next to nil chances of getting in at CMU.

@rohit7198 The math2 and math1 is actually a funny story. I bubbled in the wrong answers to the last three questions because I left the fourth last question. :))

@Bored1997‌ Surprise… Surprise… it was CS. SAT scores aren’t everything. Moreover, if Harvard has an average score of let’s say 2200, it means that for everyone who got in with a 2400, there was someone who got in with a 1960.
And that guy who was turned by UPenn… was he applying for engineering?

I guess he was in with a long shot because he too like me was applying for jerome fisher I don’t know why but the program really resonates with my resume and all the work I have done till now, the management and technology course is just to appealing to deny I guess

@Bored1997‌ Obviously your choice of major will affect your decision. My classmate with a SAT score of 2400, a subject score of 2400 (Math 2, Physics, Chemistry), TOEFL 120 and a 5 in 3 APs was turned down by Dartmouth in early decision for engineering. The guy is devastated.
I really want to get into Dartmouth. My grandfather went there and talks praises of the place.

I don’t think that Dartmouth is the best place to study engineering but could you please chance me on my college choices + where all have you applied.
