Chances For An Int'l Financial Aid Seeker

i’m applying as an int’l to harvard, p’ton, jhu, williams, swarthmore, brown, dartmouth, cornell, penn, chicago. and i’m asking for fin. aid :(

SAT
CR: 750
WR: 750
M: 790

SAT 2
Chem 800
Math 2 800
Bio M 760

School record: 1st in class from 9 onwards. toughest curriculum.

Academics

 1. NTSE Scholar. It’s a (prestigious?) govt scholarship program in india, like (or maybe better than?) nat’l merit scholar in us
 2. part of the nat’l program for youth leadership in science organised by the council for scientific and industrial research, india.
 3. one of the few students from all over the country invited to the indian institute of chemical biology for a workshop. chosen on basis of 2ndary school record.

Volunteer Work

 1. Founded the ‘teenage Voice on Alzheimer’s Program’ with the local chapter of the alz. and related disorders society of india (ardsi). the program spreads awareness on alzheimer’s among school students through presentations and competitions. ive also worked with alzheimers patients. also helped organize the 100th world alzheimer’s day awareness drive in my city.

helped organize a blood donation camp once. done my share of volunteering in hospitals.

helped out with a cancer awareness program organized by the rotary club.

Writing

 1. got a certificate of merit at the World Federation of UN Associations (WFUNA) Global Essay Competition on Peace & Disarmament. not bad considering few of the thousands of participants (which included college students) got it. hope it helps.

ive written reports on the activities of my local chapter of ardsi which have got published in the newsletter of the alzheimr’s disease int’l, the world body on alzheimer’s.

OK, enough with the alzheimer’s.

i’m also in the school debate and quiz teams and have won events throughout the country. ( even been on NDTV…only indians will get this!) i’m vice-presidents of the school quiz club and mentor junior debaters and quizzers in my school.i’m also a school prefect. i organize quizzes etc.

i believe the teacher’s recs were pretty good…

my common app essay is pretty, umm, sentimental. it’s about this old lady i was close to who got alzheimer’s and couldn’t recognise me. she actually kept asking people where i was even as i stood in front of her1 that explains the alzheimer’s fix.

for supplementary material ive sent little cartoons with one-liners. each set of cartoons deals with the college ive sent it too.

HOOKS

 1. supplementary rec. from the prez of the alz. and related disorders society of india (ardsi)
 2. the UN essay thingy
 3. can’t think of anything else.

i want to study molecular bio or its equivalent.

and i’m asking for financial aid…there go my chances!!!

don’t ask me why im not applying to yale.

good chance

NTSE is prestigious..hmm..none can state ur chances..but in my opinion, u hav a good ''chance'' in top 20s....considering the fact that ur applying for fin. aid....it might(not severly) hurt ur chances..but still a good chance....and there is no such ''toughest curriculum'' in India(provided ur in CBSE)..
Note: Dont over-flow ur sentiments in ur essays....

u need safeties

good chance, even for an international applying for aid!

but you really need safeties just incase anything happens...

isaacnewton:

a. by toughest curriculum i mean an isc student taking science+ bio and not say...commerce with business maths. (makes no difference, i don't understand any kind of math!)

b. the essay explains the whole alzheimer's fix. to offset the sentimental essay i sent cartoons as supplementary material...cartoons as in a single-box with a one-liner underneath. here are examples of cartoons i sent:

pacman & family go to a restaurant. pacman says 'let's try out the all-you-can-eat buffet again!'

man riding a mule telling friend in office car park 'look i bought a hybrid too!'

professor shows up to give speech at alzheimer's conference and asks 'why am i here again?'

fish in recording studio singing inside its fishbowl. caption: 'hey, it worked for the frog!'

the other cartoons dealt with individual colleges....

Maddy01: My safeties are THE INDIAN MEDICAL ENTRANCE EXAMS!!! HOW ON EARTH DID I END UP LIKE THIS!!!!

PS: I got 95.6 % in my ICSE. Does that really matter?

That Alzheimer thing is a hook. Most of the applicants have one-sided application- your app looks more balanced. Still competition would be tough.
Best of the Luck

Safety: Cornell(They love NTSE scholars)
Reaches: All

CORNELL LOVES NTSE SCHOLARS!!!
Too bad they accept students and then refuse to give them aid. so i heard!

they wont take u unless ur financial need is fulfilled...........

which is the same as.......I'M SCREWED! ANYBODY WOULD BE SCREWED IF CORNELL IS THEIR SAFETY!!!

Chill taemi, you've got pretty good chances. My safeties are the AIEEE and IIT (:P) and BITSAT and Vellore Institute of Technology entrance exam, and Manipal Institute of Technology exam and the EAMCET. Eek.

Manipal and VIT aren't worth giving, half of the seats would have already been booked.

Tell that to my parents?

my safeties are penn state and arizona state got into both of those no problemo...with ur sats..ever considered some public schools?

I never understood people's infactuation with ranks and names. taemi, ur studying molecular bio, ever considered some good public universities like wisconsin-madison? illinois-urbana champaign? university of michigan? all these schools you'll have a better chance of getting fin aid. also isnt penn crap for the sciences?

dda--I believe he is not applying to public universities because they do not provide need-based aid. Merit based is a possibility but by no means would those public schools be safeties, especially for an international student.

haru07:I think he is SHE......and yes ur right...they do giv fin.aid but the chances becomes very-very rare then...so they cant b considered as safeties for int'l students...

depends on the school
most public schools that give scholarships to intls award tuition waivers, and those are often awarded automatically with certain test scores.

b@rium --Any examples of those schools, along with the requirements to get the scholarships, if those tuition waivers really do exist. Are those full tuition waivers? I badly need safeties (not that I have any as int'l + aid )

Public schools do award scholarship based on test-scores, but i think they are only for Instate students.

sorry if i provided wrong info guys, dont know much abt fin aid myself.
