Do I have a shot being out of state and out of the top10%? All my stuff will be into Texas by mid January I believe. Also, I'm torn between Business and Econ. Which is easier to get into? Would I be competitive for both? Thanks!

Your test scores are great, your gpa and rank, not so much.

Noone can know for sure if you will get accepted to UT, but I can tell you pretty much 100% that you will not get in the business school. It usually cuts off around top 5% or so. IMO, your best shot is to apply for the college of liberal arts and then try to transfer as a sophomore into business, if that is your ultimate goal. But, I may be totally wrong - only UT can tell you for sure.

Good luck.

GPA does not matter at ALL! No calculation of GPA is included in the formula–just rank and SAT scores.

Your rank and SAT scores are high enough to be admitted. Your ECs look to be a solid 5/6, and based on your 12 on the SAT essay you should also be good there.

UT does NOT look at teacher recs unless you are applying to certain honors programs. They don’t want you to clutter their office by sending them, and if you should choose to send them, they will discard them.

Econ is FAR easier to get into. McCombs is one of the best business schools in the country and has admission rates accordingly. Business admissions are NOT restricted by rank. That is only for Top Ten applicants from Texas. They also admit students who are outside their school’s top ten percent as well as out of state and international students. However, it is extremely competitive. I won’t go so far as to say no, but your class rank might exclude you there (otherwise you’d probably be in). However, you are not automatically out of consideration because of the rank. I’d say you have a 95% chance of admission to Econ, and should be almost guaranteed admission to the University at the very least as an undeclared liberal arts major.

The out of state admission rate is around 30%, and the mean scores are about 1350. You exceed that and have solid ECs, so you should be good.

I had very similar stats to you and I got into the school of liberal arts as a freshman, coming from out of state. I was able to transfer into the business school as a sophomore so it is possible to do if that’s what your mind is set on. I’m almost positive though that you will be admitted to the school, but you will more than likely be denied from the business school. Don’t let that deter you from choosing business as your first choice major if that’s what you want to do. Make sure you put liberal arts as your second choice though.

UT doesn’t throw away any teacher recommendations actually…
It gets scanned in and placed in your file along with everything else.

What I meant is that they don’t actually read them…

They aren’t literally discarded I don’t think, but there is no place in the admission formula for teacher recs so they don’t look at them (some counselors might read them under the table and use them to adjust your Personal Achievement Index, but they aren’t supposed to).

But the UT admissions counselors who’ve visited my school told us that they don’t want you to send any teacher recs because it really clutters up the process. I’m guessing this is because they don’t want to scan everything into your file.

We were told that they prefer for EVERYTHING to be electronically submitted if possible, and there is no way to submit a rec electronically unless it’s through the honors application.

I just submitted my application. They will have everything by the end of the week as I rushed my scores to them. Did I apply too late, or should my chances still be quite favorable? Thanks!

Also, what about honors? Do I have a chance at that?

What does UT do if your school doesn’t rank? I have a crappy GPA(3.7W/~3.0UW, maybe higher after the 1st semester), and average(maybe subpar) SAT scores at 740M/670CR/660W, on APs I have a 3 on Chem and a 5 on Calc AB. I’m an OOS applicant; do I stand a chance at UT(I’m applying to the engineering school for compsci)?

Mikesown: Computer Science is not in the engineering school, it’s in the natural sciences school.

Your SAT scores are above average for an OOS applicant–1410 is fine. UT will compute a rank for you based on your grades and your school profile.

If you have good essays and ECs, you should be good.

AJay, what honors program are you asking about? Plan II, Liberal Arts Honors, or Business Honors? You have a shot at LAH, but I’m not so sure about teh other two.

Yeah I applied to LAH.

by the way thelonerager I computed my predicted GPA to be 3.5 with a PAI of probably no lower than 4.5 (thats giving my essays a score of 4 but that was just a low estimate). Will that pretty much get me into the university? Thanks.

It’s hard to tell each year because I don’t have access to the grids the University uses–I’ve just used the internet well to discover the actual formula instead of guessing and saying “I bet you’ll get in” like others on CC.

From what I can tell you can get in with a high AI and low PAI much more easily than with a low AI and high PAI.

I would venture to say that you should be accepted, but I can’t be 100% certain because I haven’t seen everyone’s grades and SATs and essays and ECs nor the admissions grid. Most OOS applicants who’ve applied in the past with your stats have been accepted.
