I had a bad freshman year, but I’ve gotten better.
I took An “Accelerated” class freshman year, took honors chemistry last year, and I’m taking AP Biology this year.
Worked as an umpire freshman year.
Volunteered to help coach my little sister’s softball team the summer after freshman year, and I logged 24 hours.
Taken private drum lessons and had a band for almost two years now.
Started the political science club at my school this year.
Played intramural basketball every year.
Worked from May 2008-October 2008 at a grocery store (15-20+ hours per week).
Connecticut resident.

Do I have a chance? Also, do I have a chance to get any merit aid?

I was admitted to OSU, one brother is a current student there, and my other brother was just admitted conditionally. I would say you’re right on target for the kind of student Ohio State typically admits, but you’re not at the high end that typically gets merit awards.

Just curious, why don’t you have more honors/accelerated/AP classes? Do you attend a rural high school that doesn’t offer many advanced classes? If so, that’s perfectly okay. But if you’re in regular classes while your peers are in honors or AP classes, that will hurt your chances. Take advanced classes if you can, even though they’re harder and your grades may be lower. Colleges will look favorably on the fact that you’ve challenged yourself.

Also, why do you want to go from CT to OH? If you just want to live in Ohio for some reason, there are a lot of above-average public schools you’d qualify for: Ohio U, Cincinnati, Kent State, Bowling Green, Miami of Ohio. The list of good private schools is even longer. And you’d have a better chance of getting merit aid at those schools than at OSU.

AP’S: There’s only been 3 AP’s offered in the first three years; I’ve taken one. Next year, I’m taking 2 of about 3 more. I go to a public school in a somewhat wealthy suburb. I’m considering OSU because 1. Amazing Political Science program from what I’ve heard. 2. Big school. 3. Buckeyes athletics (i’m a big sports fan).

Well, you are on track for admission, although I’d suggest bringing your grades up a bit just to be sure. Good luck!

I think you’ll be fine. My D will be starting at OSU in September. She is also OOS (from NY). She took many honors, APS, and college level classes. She applied with a 3.6 and average SAT/above average ACT and got in, though no merit aid was awarded. She’s looking to get away from the northeast corridor and meet people from other regions. She also was looking for a BIG school. We visited several of the Big Tens and OSU was one of her top picks.

Be sure to apply early (early action).

Good luck!!

You’ll get in with the national buckeye scholarship most likely…
