Chances for an OOS?

<p>I hear that it's more difficult for an OOS to get it, but then people are also saying that it'll be much easier because Universities need the money they get from the OOS fees.
Thing is, even if I can get in, I don't know that I can afford to really pay all of the OOS fees. We're middle class so we won't be getting a lot of great financial aid, but I'm a triplet so we'll be spending a LOT of cash these next few years.</p>

<p>Other info: I also applied for their honors program and I'm from California</p>

<p>So, my stats:
GPA: It's low, but I don't really know if it's weighted or unweighted. It doesn't say on my official transcripts from my counselor. It just says 3.636, but I'm pretty sure that's unweighted. Either way, I'm ranked 54 out of 700 so I'm still in the top 10%. I've got sort of an upward trend. Not very dramatic though.</p>

<p>E/Cs:
Speech and Debate- I've been in it for 3 years (since 10th) and my first year my partner and I placed third in the league and competed at the state level in duo interpretation. Just last year I placed first in Expository Speaking in my league and, again, got to compete at the state level. Last year I was the co-captain of Debate and this year I'm captain of Individual Events.
SCRAWL- We publish student art in our magazine. Again, I've been in the club for 3 years. Last year, I was the co-editor and the Vice President. This year, I'm the Editor-in-Chief and the President.
Journalism- Again, three years. It couldn't fit in my class schedule as a freshman. Besides, it was a general rule that Journalism was only for the non-niners. In 2009 I won 2nd place in the SCJEA State Write-Off competition in Critical Review. I was the Entertainment Page Editor in 11th grade and the Opinions Page Editor this year.
KEY Club- Been in it for four years, but never claimed any leadership position. I could have easily gotten a leadership position, but I didn't have a lot of time and I didn't want the club to hurt because of me. I really just wanted to be in the volunteer organization to help people, not put in on an application so titles didn't mean much to me.
Acapella Group- I decided to include this activity rather than my SRLA experience (SRLA was a student group that helps kids train for the marathon. I decided not to mention it, but my recommender noted it in her Letter of Rec for the Honors App) even though I've only been involved this year. The group was only created recently by a teacher who wanted to showcase the exceptional talent of the student body who couldn't be in other productions for one reason or another. This was a very different activity for me, but an inspirational one nonetheless.</p>

<p>I got pretty good comments from teachers and my counselor for my essays and I'd revised them several times.</p>

<p>I applied to three UCs (UC Santa Cruz as my safety, UC Irvine, and UCLA as my reach), but I'd really rather not be close to home. Just in case I'm also applying to Chapman and Loyola Marymount University, but they're so... SoCal. I love where I live, but I just want a change of scenery. I want to leave and really experience being away and not being able to drive home in half an hour to see mommy and daddy. I need to be independent. I feel like it's in my blood. My dad left his small farmtown home in Montana for the big city in Arizona. My mom ditched the downtown poverty of her Manila condo for fast-paced LA. I just want to get out and live my life on my own without the safety net of home being so close by.
I would love to go to U-dub, but I'm worried that my gpa is too far below par to make me competitive enough. I'm also applying to Marist and the University of Dayton as my other OOS options, but UW is really my choice. Marist is cold and a little far from the city. Also, it's a private and only covers 71% of financial need. Dayton's too...religous. Chance me please? I'm so stressed.
Also, if you know anything about their financial aid especially for an OOS, please help! I've got info that says UW covers 88% of need, but is that for all applicants or just in-state?</p>

<p>buuumpppp?
…</p>

<p>you should be good.</p>

<p>your SAT and ACT scores alone should get you in. as long as you didn’t screw up the essays. the rest of your academic work may be what puts you on the line, but you should really get in.</p>

<p>Any ideas on financial aid?
It’ll be tough trying to pay for college for our first year because I’m a triplet. My older sister (by about a minute) has about the same stats and has applied/is applying to universities both public and private, in-state and OOS. Same here. Younger sister (again, by about a minute) is applying to schools that don’t cost quite as much, but it’ll still be a stretch trying to pay for school.
We’re in financial purgatory (over 100k a year) so we’re way too “rich” to get a lot of need-based aid, but with three kids it’ll be a rough few years ahead. Both my older sister and I plan on attending graduate school as well.
Anybody got info on UW financial aid? Or any of the other schools I mentioned earlier?</p>

<p>I agree w/ the other posters. And btw, UW doesn’t look at your AP scores, so you shouldn’t worry about that.</p>

<p>Yeah I kinda have the same situation as you as far as financial aid.</p>

<p>Just look for departmental scholarships. I got into Foster Freshmen Direct, applied for the scholarships in April (super easy - you fill out one basic form and it applies for a bunch of scholarships within the business school), and snagged a nice sum of money. I think you have a far better chance getting a scholarship through the school than through some random organization that people from all over the country are applying for. Keep an eye out for freshman-only scholarships too.</p>

<p>Best of luck!</p>

<p>more info for Foster:
[Freshman</a> Direct Scholarship Program](<a href=“http://www.foster.washington.edu/academic/undergrad/Pages/FreshmanDirectScholarships.aspx]Freshman”>http://www.foster.washington.edu/academic/undergrad/Pages/FreshmanDirectScholarships.aspx)</p>

<p>If I apply for departmental scholarships only if I get in to the department offering said scholarships though, right? Like I can apply for the Foster Scholarships only if I get into Foster?
I don’t think I’ll get into Foster Freshman Direct. . .
Will I know whether or not I’m receiving those scholarships before I need to make the decision whether or not to attend the University?
It’s not like I’m not planning on working. I do plan on having one (or two) part-time jobs, maybe a work study, summer internships, etc. It’s just that my EFC is about 15k and that’s for me and my sisters. Total, 45k.
I saw another thread talking about OOS and paying tuition, but it didn’t provide a lot of answers.</p>

<p>ahem, bump?</p>

<p>I heard its pretty hard to get in OOS but your stats look fairly decent, not 100% but I think you have a good shot at getting in</p>

<p>Waitlisted.
I am so bitter right now. that was my first choice. Well, for anybody looking at this for a reference, here’s to hoping you fare better than I do. Although, if you did do better, don’t tell me. There’s too much hate in me right now to feel happy for anybody.</p>

<p>i was waitlisted as well. I’m also from socal. but i think you have a very good chance if you’re willing to wait for it. i think they will admit at least 500 applicants (just assuming, not positive) if not more and you’re probably in the top percentile with those stats. you’re stats are much better than mine anyway lol. good luck. hopefully i’ll see you there</p>
