Essays: Excellent but not spectacular

Additional information- MOST IMPORTANT wrote two essays

In my junior year I had to take care of my brother – 1st grade, mom worked out of state due to economy in the housing market, dad had to work evening hours until midnight – lasted until April- GRADES effected big time, effected AP scores- everything went bad to turn it around- I took 7 ap classes 1 hn senior year, 1 hn class over summer w/ 2 programs.

I also have stuttering which affects me everyday- this should make me stand out…

Having relativley low grades but a good rigor (10 ap's) is one thing but to also only have a 25 act is another. I mean I could maybe see you having a decent shot if you had a 32+ but I think a 25 is just too low especially considering your gpa.

miktau i understand what you are saying but understand that i didn't learn english until 8, which did effect me in my ACT scores a lot, esp on english section, not the reading. SO you are saying it is pretty much rejected

I see you did JROTC. Are you going to do ROTC at WM? They will help get you in. The first thing they said to me when I showed interest was "Where are you in the application process so we can help out?"

Wow, almost cross-posted with Taysel about ROTC. I didn't even know W&M had ROTC, but they do. That may well help you in the admission process. In any case, the one sure way to not get in is to not apply. As long as you have at least one safety school that you love and would love to attend, there's nothing wrong in applying to one or more reach schools. Good luck to you! Where else are you applying?

I'm applying to..
UNC
Wake Forest
NC State
Virginia Tech
Case Western
Clemson
Georgia Tech

I will look into the ROTC thing..

Your application will stand out, that's for sure. However have you considered that William and Mary may be a bit too challenging for you? I say this in all seriousness. I looked at your list of schools and I think you may be shooting too high. There should have been some definite safety schools on that list. The idea isn't so much to take as many AP's as you possibly can without considering that you need to do well in them. Your EC schedule could is impressive, however it appears to have had an effect on your GPA and your ability to do well on the ACT. If you took the SAT's at all and they are not good, William and Mary WILL see them. I know you are originally from India and of course that will help, but I don't see you as being able to do well here. Your ACT score is just way to low and your GPA doesn't gives the impression that you might just be struggling here. I don't know.....

I wish you all the best and for certain, you have an impressive application. It's just that the real "meat and potatoes" of your app is lacking. My opinion is that you will not gain admission and I really think your college list is lacking any real safety. I hope you prove me wrong!

Pedsox

pedsox you are right on how i don't have a true safety, that is right now one of the biggest things in my mind right now, i'm scared i might end up at community college, hopefully i'm wrong. I'm aiming high but this is the just the person i'm, i will always struggle on english that hurt me on the ACT, or else i should've made a 28-29 easily. My top college is UNC, but william and mary is still a great school imo, hey if is meant to be , it is meant to be.

Jeudi,

Good luck with your application process. As far as your fear that you will end up at community college, don't be. It is not a death sentence, it is not an academic stigma that will doom you from ever getting into a good college. If however, it comes to going to a community college, don't become depressed, just use your skills that you have, make outstanding grades and get involved then transfer out to a good school.

In all honest, a majority of those that go to CC then transfer are more likely to excel at an university than those straight out HS, at least from what I hear from university professor friends. But, hopefully you will get into your choice of university and won't have to deal with it, but if you do, don't despair it's not the end of the world.
