CHANCES for any Ivy?

One question. If everything in your application is as perfect as can be, great EC's, Student government President, Great Essays, wonderful letters of recommendation, Minority status: African American, and top ten percent of your class, 3.98 G.P.A BUT you SAT is a 1160 and your ACT is 23.... is there even the glimmer of a chance that you qualify??

Those scores would get your application thrown out on the first round of review, no chance

I would not submit that SAT score, rather the ACT. And it’s incredilbly hard to see it happen, but there are miracles. Don’t stress too much though. If you say your ECs are very strong, and you took AP/Honors Classes, you will end up going to a good school.

Help me?

Thats just heartbreaking, I feel like all my hard work is wasted on a single test :’( but thank you for taking your time to post.

Study for it, because that ACT is everything you should have learned in school. With those stats you should be getting at least a 28 with no prep. If you submit your ACT as a 23, colleges will think your school is a major joke.

Idk whats up, maybe it is… Ive taken the hardest curriculum at my school, and have one of the best grades… Lol ive always thought I was smart >.< But its too late to retake because its January and Im a senior in high school… Oh I also have good A.P. test scores… 5’s and 4’s its only the SAT and the ACT that I suck at maybe im just not cut out for 4 hour tests…

I don’t know if should want to end up at an Ivy. You might not be academically qualified, despite your high GPA.

Look into test optional schools, your scores are just too low for any of the top schools. You have to also remember that most applicants at top schools have those same great things (ECs, essays, GPAs and so on), so why take the kid with a 23 over a similar kid with a 33? Also unless you are a horrible test taker, as somebody else said, the low scores could imply that you could not handle the rigor of top schools and have the high GPA due to grade inflation at your school due to easy classes.

Ah, it’s too late to apply to wake forest but they are test optional.

I’m sorry both you really do need to improve those SATs. A score of 1160 is completely unacceptable.

Definitely grade inflation. You shouldn’t have a 3.98. The classes are your school are too easy and it sounds like you simply go to an uncompetitive school. Out of everyone in the country in your position over the past 10 years who applied to Ivy League schools, I would be shocked if more than 0.1% have been accepted.

You don’t deserve that GPA and it is a shame that some school systems are incompetent at grading students rigorously. You may think I am being rude, but if you can barely get a 1.2k on your SAT and 23 on the ACT, you lack a lot of mathematics, reading, and grammar knowledge that should have led you to get B’s and maybe a few C’s.

Be happy you got the GPA you did. If you were in a fair school system, you would be significantly worse off.

Wow, that was brutal.

OMG i put 1160 I meant 1660 NOW CHANCE ME!!! >.<
Holly crap maybe there is hope now… lol I meant 1660 not 1160

Heck no I did not get a 1160 yes i know that would be practically impossible to get in…
a 1660 might be the same but you know waaay better…
And for your information people from my school have gone to ivy leagues so my school isnt “easy” and i take the same A.P. tests as everyone else and get 4’s and 5’s… -_-

I’m sorry, but still no. That score does not even put you in the 25th percentile…

Okay, thank you for commenting!

Don’t post threads like these. Do your best, study + retake if you can, and apply. Never let the chance of failure prevent you from applying.

I would study and retake the ACT!! I have taken both tests, and I feel the ACT was easier. Additionally, the ACT seems easier to improve on… I was able to increase my score four points, pushing me into the mid-30’s (ACT Range). Obviously, you are an intelligent person if you have a 3.98 GPA and are enrolled in multiple Honors/AP classes, which means you have the potential to raise your score drastically. I would seriously consider hiring a tutor/enrolling in online-classes/ACT prep classes/etc. I took online classes between the June and October testing dates and was able to raise my score significantly. It just depends on if you are willing to put in the time, money, and energy to try and get a better score. I know all Ivies accept ACT scores through February, so you do still have a chance! Truthfully though, as of right now, a 23 is practically impossible for acceptance to an Ivy. With the national average being a 21, you do not set yourself apart from even the vast majority of students throughout the nation, let alone the high-caliber applicants who have taken the time and spent the money to apply to Ivy League schools.
Best of Luck.

I think people here are being a little too pessimistic. A SAT score of 1660 hurts, but doesn’t kill the chances immediately.

The lowest ACT at uChicago currently is 23, if that helps ^.^
