Hey everyone. I'm so scared I'm not going to get into a UC...I've slacked off a bit in high school, but here are my stats so far:

GPA: 3.3 (yes, low, I know)
EC: Newspaper 8th grade, Newspaper 11+12 grade (very prestigous newspaper in California — we've won a lot of awards and are the best in California), Youth Council 11+12 grade, volunteered at a non profit brain center

I'm planning on retaking SAT I's and SAT II's in a few months, so I'm not gonna put them on here. Currently I'm taking 4 AP's, so hopefully those will boost up my GPA (even though it's a little too late, I'm really trying this semester). I took AP Statistics last year and got a 3.

GAHHH...anyone know which UC will take me and any advice for me? T_T;; I'm shooting for at least Irvine...someone please give me hope. If I do really well this semester (planning on getting 4 A's and 2 B's so a 4.33 GPA) do you think this will help my chances?

What grade are you in? For UCs, only 10th and 11th count. Are you in the the top 10% of your class? Even at the bottom UCs, 93% plus are. Really high SATs can help, but a UC GPA of 3.3 will make UCI a reach.

UCB/UCLA: Super Reach
UCSD: Reach/Slight Reach (Seen Some People with that GPA Make It)
UCI/UCD/UCSD: Slight Reach/High Match
UCSC/UCR: Match
UCM: Safety

I'm a senior...:\ Oh boy. I just really have to get good SAT scores, good grades and a good essay to up my chances (I really want to go to Irvine).

As an overall opinion, should I sacrifice the freshman year experience and go to CC in hopes of transfering to UCB, UCLA, and UCSD? Or should I settle...

Well, my sister told me to get into whatever UC takes me because it's important for me to get the "freshman experience" of college dorm life, meeting new people, getting to know your school, etc. But I think that I should transfer from a CC and sacrifice that experience in order to go to a school that I really want to go to.

Golden Bear:

Yeah, I know that you're supposed to finish Freshman and Sophomore year before transfering to a UC; I was just talking primarily about this "experience". But who knows...maybe I'll get lucky and maybe I'll do extremely well on SAT's, which will shift my luck.

there is no freshman experience. My brother went to UCLA as a transfer and they put you into a dorm just like freshman. the only difference is that you live with transfers not freshman. EVERYTHING else is the same. You lose two years of college experience but thats it.

Assuming you get >2000 on the SAT I and >700/>700 on the SAT IIs,
UCB/UCLA: Reach
UCSD: Slight Reach
UCI/UCD/UCSB: Match
UCSC/UCR/UCM: Safe Match

If you do well on your SATs you will get into a UC. How well you do will decide which ones. Shoot high on your SATs and Irvine and Davis might come within reach.

The only problem with the CC route is that if you don't do well in CC, then you won't be able to transfer to the UCs, while if you apply now you will definitely get into one of them--even if it's only UCR or UCM.

You have to decide whether you can do 3.0+ GPA work in a CC the next two years--or if you are likely to slack off or just do less than 3.0 GPA. If the answer is the latter, then apply to the UCs now.

Thanks for responding guys. Just wondering, what is the lowest score for SAT 2 Chem and Math IIC and SAT I that I can get to make sure I'm a match for UCI/UCD/UCSB?
