how bout me?
around 3.6 UW, 3.85 W, planning to get around 2200+ on SAT I (i think i can, on practice tests i get around that score), planning on getting 800 on SAT II Math IIC (again, i think i can because i got a raw score of 41 on a practice in the barrons book), and planning to get a 750 or higher in SAT II physics (got 660 last time, but i really didnt learn anything in class and im studying hard this summer). 150+ hours volunteer at a hospital, cross country and track 3 years, band 3 years, AP scholar so far (took 3), i took many challenging courses.

I got suspended freshman yr, but i'll try to explain that in my essay. i also improved my grades a lot over the years

UCB/UCLA--Slight Reach
UCSD--Match
UCI/UCSB/UCD--Safe Match
UCSC/UCR/UCM--Safety to Safe Match
USC--Match
Stanford--Reach (need more ECs)
Michigan--Match
NYU--Match
John Hopkins/Georgetown--Slight Reach

so my chances may be better at USC than at UCLA? i doubt i can get into any of these schools listed except for the safe matches. i probably wont apply to private schools because i stopped talking in class so much so that i wouldnt say anything stupid, so my teachers may not give me a letter of recommendation

Iildimsum7 - For reference, last year my son had stats a lot like what you're projecting. One varsity sport, no volunteering, no band (but no suspensions, either.) He didn't get into UCB, UCLA, USC or UCSD. He did get into the other UC's

i'd say my high school is pretty competitive. a lot of guys in my school are going to berkeley (more than 10? maybe), about 5 goin to UCLA, 2 going to stanford, 2 to cornell, 1 dartmouth, 1 reed, 1 kenyon, and many other great colleges

how can i improve my chances for getting into UCLA? i really want to go there.

NOTE: i forgot to mention that i have been in the chess club since my freshman year and i was the winner of the chess tourney at my school last year (my first year trying, taking down the 3 year champ).

Will senior year course load or grades matter at all?

USC is easier to get into than LA.
UCB/UCLA--Slight Reach/Low Match ( if you do get that 2200 more on the low match side)
UCSD--Match
UCI/UCSB/UCD--Safe Match
UCSC/UCR/UCM--Safety to Safe Match
USC--Match
Stanford--Reach
Michigan--Match
NYU--Match
John Hopkins/Georgetown--Slight Reach

Senior course load matters, as long as you are continuing to take a fairly rigorous course load, but Senior year grades do not count towards your UC GPA, however, make sure you pass all your classes or you could end up being rejected (forgot what it's called) from the school you had already been accepted to. For UCLA, just do really well on your SAT's and SAT II's and you should be able to get in. Good luck! :)

well, i am taking 2 APs 1st semester of senior year, but only 6 classes, including band. i may take french because im interested in learning languages as a 7th class (i already completed all the courses there are to spanish). is this course load good enough?

NOTE: i noticed that people put down how many years they have played instruments. if it matters at all:
10 years of piano, 8 years of clarinet, 5 years of saxophone

does volunteering count for anything before high school? i only did like 5 hrs at Glide Memorial (the homeless place shown in Pursuit of Happyness) in 8th grade. also, should i put down that i am filipino on my apps or asian?

man...i really want to go to USC but my dad wouldnt let me go if i were accepted. how can i help my dad with this financial issue? i think i should advise him in stocks... (i actually made 40% in 3 days in the CNBC contest but my dad still wont let my advice influence him)

The average UW GPA for Berkeley is a 3.9; the average W GPA is a 4.2-4.3. Since GPA is of utmost importance, I think it's safe to say it's reach.
