Chances for Appalachian Guy

What do you all think my chances for admittance to these schools are? NOBODY from my area (Eastern Kentucky) even applies. If any even go to college, it's to the small CC in town. A little about me: My dad died when I was three and I was reared in Eastern Kentucky by a single mom.

Hah, I guess you could say I'm poor? My EFC on the FAFSA will probably be 0. Mom took a few classes through U of Phoenix and hers was 0.

Awards: Quest Bridge Ntl College Match Finalist, WYMT Mountain Student Achiever, Graduation Marshall, Voted Smartest in Class 4 years straight (is this an award lol?), Who's Who in Band and Honor Roll

Extracuriculars: I worked for the majority of this year at the local supermarket to help pay for food (I'm not kidding lol.) Before that I was in band as a section leader and now I'm on the academic team. Nothing stellar like 1st chair state, but always busy with EC's.

Thank you very much for your help! Ask anything you need!

All of those schools are extremely competive. YOU NEED TO ADD EASIER SCHOOLS. You mentioned that you live in Virginia, UVA maybe?

Colminerson,
Congrats to u!!! Your profile is impressive and I am sure you will make it to a great school! You should be very proud of yourself!!! Keep up the good work!

I’ve applied to the University of Kentucky and Transylvania Univeristy as safety schools. Didn’t really think I needed to mention that lol.

Wow, what an inspiring story! Please let us know where you end up. And very best wishes – your stats are great, and yes, top schools are looking for geographic / income diversity.

BTW (silly unrelated question): Do you like Patty Loveless? The way she sings “You’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” about breaks my heart.

@strizessed – OP lives in Eastern Kentucky. Not the same place as Virginia, LOL.

Diane, married to a guy from Louisville

Oops–just saw that OP lives in Virginia, goes to school in Kentucky…sorry!

Yes I do. I believe she was born in the same town I go to school in!

And thanks. I thought my stats were great for my area, but whenever I see people who are like “I HAVE A 2400 SAT, 4 5’s ON AP EXAMS, AND I TUTOR POOR PERUVIAN CHILDREN WHILST PLAYING 1ST CHAIR JAZZ FLUTE IN STATE. I DON’T THINK I CAN GET IN… :'(.” It worries me xD

if you go to school in VA but live in KY, which state can you claim residency in? Or can you get IS tuition from both states?

i live in virginia and go to school in kentucky*

anyway, i’m really not sure yet. i know that while kentucky offers financial aid based solely on your highschool grades, i am inelligible because i do not reside in the state. because of this, i am going to assume it depends on the state you live in, not where you enroll in highschool. sad, i lived in kentucky most of my life and consider myself a kentuckian; it was only some unfortunate events that caused me to switch states.

Why don’t you have any match schools?

I hope you get into one of the top schools.

Thanks!

Given my information, what schools do you all think would be a match for me then?

try NYU, BC, UMD, UVA
I think Brown is around match for you because it is a lower ivy and you have good stats

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1039723-chance-me-i-will-definitely-chance-back.html

I really have been thinking about UVA, but since I’m a “Kentuckian at heart,” I haven’t heard an awful lot about it. Of course people where shocked in my area when I said something other than the community college. Is UVA a good school? Hope I don’t sound silly.

UVA’s a great school!
You sound like you have an excellent chance for those top schools, but no one can be sure of getting into them!
How about adding UNC-Chapel Hill to your list?
Your safety schools should still be schools you want to go to- not just schools you know you can get into.

Haha, well thanks! We’ll see what happens!

I think I’d like to go to my safety schools if all else fails. I probably could have gotten a full ride at one of the smaller colleges in Kentucky, but Transylvania and U.K. seem to be the best in my opinion.
