I wanted to ask how my chances are for an ROTC scholarship for the University of Florida. I would like a full 4 year scholarship (i mean who wouldn't) but getting a 3 year one would be great too. If i were to apply i would apply to all branches to get a better chance. I want to see what you guys and gals think my chances are for this scholarship. Here is my general profile:

1.Academics
-3.5uw and 5.4 wgpa (im going to get that 3.5 higher this year and next and my wgpa will go up to a 6 at least according to my guidance counselor)
-Top 1% of the class
-currently in IB
-have taken 4 AP classes (calc, human geo, environmental sciences, and macroeconomics) in my first two years and taking 5 more this year (Gov,Language, US history, Biology, and Chemistry)
-I think im in all honors (I have no idea what IB calls their classes, just IB biology or IB "the class name") (If you guys know how IB does it i take: HL English, History, Bio and SL math, chem and span)
-I havent taken the official SAT yet but i got 2000-2200 in the practice ones ive taken.
2. Athletics:
-2 years tennis (preparing for tournaments in the spring and summer)
-Black belt in To-Shin-Do
-Track and Field since last year (will most likely get varsity letter for it)
-Will join a club soccer league over the summer
-I am in good physical shape and can crank out 50+ push ups, over 80 crunches, and 11 chin-ups and my one mile is in the low 6 minutes.
3. Clubs and EC
-in NHS (cant run for officer until im a senior)
-FBLA and going to states for that
-Debate club
-in a cricket club
-UNICEF club
-I will most likely get officer positions in FBLA, NHS, Cricket and UNICEF
-I also plan on going to boys state

I live in state and plan to major in engineering.

If anyone could tell me how im doing and leave feedback that can help my chances I would greatly appreciate it.

UF does not weight grades that high. IB and AP courses are and extra 1 point, while honors are an extra .5. HL and SL doesnt matter in terms of weight. Honors would be denoted as honors. IB classes aren;t honors, they are higher than that.

You look good, especially since Army is a bit easier than say Air Force, in terms of academics. If you can take the PFT now, do it becuase then its less to worry about next year. Also, if I recall, you getting the AROTC scholarship, it can go to any college, you don’t apply for UF. So if you get in, you can go somewhere else.

I wouldn’t worry. I know people in IB (I’m an IB senior myself in Pasco!) who have gotten in with no sports. I personally only have one varsity letter, Golf Captain. Just make sure you prepare ofr those tests, and you should be fine with AROTC. Does your school have a JROTC program? Even if it is for another branch, definitely ask the person in charge.

You are in a great position to get an Army ROTC scholarship, but it is not true that you can take it to any college. In fact, every Army ROTC scholarship is locked to a specific college or university. Plus, each college has a quota, and it can be difficult to get around the quota. The good news is that you can get more than one Army ROTC scholarship. Some students get as many as three (I have never heard of more than that) and thus can make a choice between different colleges.

So, if the quota fills at UF before you get awarded a ROTC scholarship, then you need a plan B. That plan should take into consideration how badly you want to attend UF. If that is important, then consider enrolling at UF and choose to be a ROTC cadet (a scholarship is not required). Then try to get a three year scholarship. If the scholarship is more important than UF, then take the scholarship wherever it is good for.

All of this is especially important if you are a high school senior. If so, the die is cast. Too late to change much. If you are a senior, and have not applied, then I have no advice. The deadline was January 10th. I hope you are a junior.

Personally, I received both an Army ROTC scholarship and an NROTC scholarship; then decided to go with the Navy. The Air Force is the only branch which lets you choose your college. But they typically expect you to go to an in-state university where you are a state resident. Very difficult to get an AFROTC scholarship to a private college.

NROTCgrad thanks for the response! I am a junior right now and UF is the main college i want to go to so i hope i get in. Since you already got a scholarship can you tell me what was your profile like?

My profile? Well, let’s put it this way… not near as good as yours, especially regarding extra curricular activities. I had decent grades, more A’s than B’s. My ACT was 28, SAT was 1200 (old test, thus about 1800 new test). Also, I was involved in Army Junior ROTC (which helped more than you might think).

You were not even in grade school when I got my scholarship. Things have changed some since then, but the biggest change is that it appears more competitive than ever. I have been helping my nephew apply for the NROTC scholarship and to Annapolis. So, I have gotten up to speed.

Anyway, you look like a top-notch candidate. Just keep it up, and also consider adding some other schools besides UF to your list. It is not a real choice unless you have at least two options. Think about West Point too. You are within reach of that!
