Great essay, and great letters of rec.

Not likely, sorry. Average SAT of a Banneker/Key kid is like 1450/1600 I think. It’s literally the top of the top.

^ Im only off by about a hundred points tho! :’(

Congrats and welcome to the Honors College, kpopislyfe. Your 4.0 gpa is a wonderful achievement and your class rank will be a big plus. SAT and other stats will be viewed in context. (e.g. which county and high school you attended.) I wish you luck and success as a future Terp!!

Last year, the average for Banneker/Key Scholars was about 1500. kpopislyfe, your SAT is nearly 200 points below last year’s average. You have great grades and great activities.

Last year, they told folks that it isn’t all about the numbers in selecting Banneker/Key Scholars. But that is a large part of it.

Aww, so disappointed :frowning: Thanks for the feedback guys!

Hello notjoe,

Much will depend on the OP’s county and high school. If s/he is in the top 2% of that subset, there is a chance.

plumazul,

Good to “see” you. We haven’t chatted since last spring. How are your studies going?

I hadn’t heard that before, about county and high school. It didn’t come up last year, not here on CC nor at the Banneker/Key all-day event. Is this something new, or something of which you’ve recently become aware?

Also, is that just for in-state students at Maryland high schools? For public schools, or for private schools, too?

I don’t want to disclose too much personal info but I attend a magnet high school that is a National Blue Ribbon School, if that counts for anything.

Anyone have any idea when this scholarship is awarded? Just curious.

@13woodrm, although the actual award is in mid March (I was notified on March 14th), candidates will be invited to the interview by mid Feb.

@notjoe, yes, you pick up things here and there over time. It seems to be a way to represent the entire state.
The year has been great! Just took the MCAT so I’m in the 30 day limbo, waiting for my score :eek:

plumazul,

Hmmm… Very interesting. Are they looking at all high schools, or just public high schools?

Glad to hear you’re doing so well.

Thank you @plumazul. Do you know what method they usually use to notify finalists (mail, email, phone, portal)?

@notjoe,

I don’t know :frowning:
No one ever mentioned and I never asked.

@13woodrm, they use e-mail a lot but I couldn’t find the e-mail notification. I did find the one where they told me about my free iPod after I accepted! :smiley:

They always seem to send follow-up paper mail.

Killer GPA, but your SAT is pretty bad. I assure you, you have zero chance of winning BK or any other meaningful scholarship at UMD as it is all based on test scores, and there are plenty of Maryland kids who score 1500/2300+
who UMD tries to buy so they don’t go off to better schools.

Sad truth.

This is a repost of a message I wrote a couple of years ago in response to similar questions regarding statistics. Happy to report that my son is loving every minute of his time at CP and doing well in classes:) Good luck to all and don’t be discouraged if your numbers aren’t perfect.
"My son received full BK last year. His stats were good, not what others are saying is needed. 1450 SAT’s 4.38 weighted, 3.85 unweighted. He had great EC’s and two internships, coordinated program to send supplies to the troops for Christmas thru NHS and was captain of several varsity teams. The thing that helped him, we believe, is that the interview committee looks to see who will make a difference at UMD in the future. One of his interview questions was “what do you see yourself doing in a year at UMD”? And his response was that he would be involved in social programs, community outreach programs and would be a rabid Terps sports fan. All that is true, (hopefully not to the detriment of his grades…). He is having a great time! So just be aware that is is NOT all statistics, the interview was very important

3mdboys,

Actually, your post kinda supports the idea that the Banneker/Key IS about grades and test scores. A 3.85 GPA is hardly low, and a 1450 SAT is quite near to last year’s average of about 1500.

The original poster here, though, has a markedly lower SAT - 1320. If not almost eliminating her from consideration, it certainly makes it much more of an uphill climb for her.

What about a GPA of 3.8, SAT of 1400, great recs, ECs, and essays. any chance for the scholarship? also, does it matter of your in state or oos for the scholarship?

@Insanemom,

A rough rule of thumb is the top 2% of the applicant pool will put you in the running. Both IS and OOS are considered.
