Thanks in advance! BC is probably one of my top schools so I really want to get in EA.

My essay is either going to be about growing up with 4 siblings and the dynamics of a large household and how it has made me who I am today or about growing up in a very affluent area, but struggling financially and having work through high school to save up for college.
Thank you!

Dear macmac5594 : Your high school curriculum presented is generally referred to as “AP Lite” in that you have no hard sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), no AP Calculus AB/BC (unless this was dropped from your note), and no history APs (European, American, World). You do have an English AP (3) and a pending Spanish AP exam course. Your senior year schedule is by no means overly rigorous (Mock Trial, Expository Writing after an AP Course, and Culinary Arts). Honestly, we are somewhat lost on what it means to be in a very competitive high school when your senior curriculum is presented on these terms. We would have expected five AP courses and the coursework in junior year support that schedule.

While I am not doubting the impact that your being “one of five children” might have had on you, is that really the backbone of an essay? Is your socioeconomic story so unique from what so many others experience? Both of these situations were “handed to you”, so your essay is bound to be your reaction to those situations.

Instead, why not consider an essay topic where you made the rules, you executed the game plan, and you instilled success both in the implementation and for those around you? Hopefully, you can see the difference here : the former is very reactive, the latter is very proactive.

Please carefully consider the financial implications of not only attending Boston College, but also the travel and associated costs with coming across country - holiday travel, storage of personal items, purchases needed here on the East Coast and such. You are going to see on the order of $2,000-$4,000 extra cost per year as a result of the cross-country travel/expenses. While financial aid might help your expense picture, you need to think hard about these aspects in addition to your application.

You’ll note that this chance-me did not discuss many of the typical resume/profile topics. We think that there are many issues here to be considered by you on a personal level prior to applying.

Scottj, thank you for your reply and insight.
My sister attended a school in Washington and my brother is at UPenn, so I am aware of the costs that come with attending out of state schools and that is definitely a factor being considered. I just have to know that if I do attend an out of state school, I won’t be able to come home for all the breaks and such.

As for my essay, my main goal is to apply early action to BC and unfortunately I think it is too late to scrap my essay and rewrite it, that would put at more of a disadvantage because it would probably be less refined. However, I did attempt to make edits that made it have a more proactive viewpoint.

Thank you for your feedback, it was greatly appreciated!
